Just saw this and thought I'd share. Petco has a 50% off coupon on their website. It's good for any reptile. Gonna get another leopard gecko this weekend.

I had been invited by Petco to come out this weekend for this event. Petco has reached out to reptile rescues and herp societies to join in this event this weekend. They wanted folks in there who are able to help educate in the care these animals require, beyond their FAQs that they give out. I wish i was able to attend, but alas I am in South Dakota on Vacation playing at reptile gardens.
I do give credit to my petco store for reaching out to us and trying to expand into education.

when I see them stop selling monitors, boas, water dragons, sliders, etc I might go there...but they're selling animals to novices that have never kept a critter before, they don't stock the supplies needed to care for them...it doesn't sit well with me. Hell, ours still sells green igs for 29.99.
Until they stop selling species that the average pet owner isn't able to manage, I'm not too happy.
You know I support keeping these legal; I have giants and enjoy them...but there's a world of difference between a breeder you have to call up and arrange stuff with and a pet shop that trys to encourage impulse buys of animals that are hard to manage.

Quite honestly the store I work with uses me as a filter. They got me in there to discourage iguana ownership when corporate shipped them their way. Thankfully they dont sell boas or monitors. They also no longer sell iguanas. What stores need to do is get local herp group support to help with the verification to corporate.

How do you mean verification to corporate?
I'm tempted to bring my big 'ol Argentine to the reptile rally. Theyv'e got a group of 2-3 BCI in there right now at 160 a pop...let people see just how big a boa can get

Unfortunately, the Petco/Petsmart business model is one of marketing these perishable novelty items in a state of stasis until expired or sold. These perishable goods are but the "hook" in the transaction, a lost leader as it were. The money is in the husbandry equipment, accessories, and incidentals that come along with the purchase.
The animal stock is purchased from a corporate "factory", with no regard to those animal's wellbeing what so ever. The really sad part is that it seems this is becoming more and more the norm, as the rules and regulations become harder and harder to negotiate, allowing only for the deep pockets of corporate power to survive.
The little guy is getting squeezed out by the corporate bean counters.

Local stores have little say over what is carried to be honest. The store I work with got a shipment of iguanas. They sent them back, and the shipment came in again. They are looked at as quick sale animals. Then the store contacted me.
They took a record slow time to place and in the report to corporate offices they also took my records to show why iguanas dont work. Its been 2 years and they havent had any. It takes a little outside push at times. They also sent in a form that showed which laws violate local laws with my help. My store has a lot of the good starter pets as a result. I also have help train the staff on the care. when I am in the store with my rescue, I have full permission to refer to PROPER supplies. Not just what they sell.
Making a good relationship with the store helps in the long run.
FYI The store also keeps track of what we have available for adoption as a result and if they sell what we have, they will refer the people to us first. This store will also refuse sales and I have been present for that.

I'd clean up the old sheds and dirt on the floor of your own posted pics before I'd critasize a national chain that keep their store cages consistantly clean and neat and products on the shelf with no dust. VM
It's not in the cages *shrug* I doubt the animals care if the floor of the room that their cage is in has dirt on it.

some of what you think is dirt is floor damage. The house was built in 1938 and the floors show it. We want to replace them but that's not cheap. :-/ We may try to refinish them at some point but that's *still* a lot of money. We moved 2 years ago and it's been constant renovation *sigh* the joys of home ownership!
