Kingsnake?

BrandyMarie Jul 14, 2010 02:56 AM

Hi! My husband brought home this little snake today. We thought maybe it was a corn snake and posted it somewhere but everyone seems to think its a baby kingsnake. Its skinnier than a pencil and about 7-8 inches long. Any help would be great, thanks.

Where do ya'll live? No need to get real specific but a general region (i.e west Texas or central Idaho or something) would be helpful. I don't *think* it's a kingsnake but am not swearing on a stack of bibles at this poitn.

I live in southeast New Mexico. I'll check out stuff on the ground snake and see if thats what he is. I plan on keeping him but I sure hope he gets at least a little bigger .

That'd be a ground snake then. That's as big as they get. Diet is mostly arthropods IIRC. Neat little guys but I'm not sure how well they do in captivity.

he won't get much bigger. try feeding crickets with the legs pulled off (so he can swallow them) or try other insects like spiders.. If he does not eat them it would be best to release.

from the pic it appears he can only get a couple inches bigger.

You know I pride myself in being able to ID snakes but That little guy has me stumped. It does resemble a kingsnake but that solid body color is not anything I'm familiar with. Like Varanid said if you can give some location that would help. It's definately nothing I've ever seen here in Florida. The head does have a king look to it though.

It's a Variable Ground Snake (Sonora semiannulata).
