rat breeding

I just started breeding rats and my one female just ahd its first litter. My ? is what the hell is the long red tube that is hanging out of her? It has been that way for almots 5 hours now is it normal of is she going to die or what can someone help me.

It sounds like the umbilical cord that attaches the babies to the mother. She should not die but make sure she eats it when the afterbirth comes out. If it doesn't come out soon then she may have more babies stuck inside or is haveing complications with the afterbirth in which case you may have to take her to the vet.

but taking a rat to a vet to fix a messed up birth isnt really a good option. while it CAN be fixed.. imagine spending several hundred dollars for one $3 feeder rat.. so then you can have a several hundred dollar SPAYED rat which you cant even breed anymore..

if it is the umbilical something is pretty wrong.. it could be a prolapse.. the moms pushed out part of the birthing organs during labor.. in which case she'll die

if that is the problem.. and if it isnt fixed by now.. just kill her off and replace her with a new breeder female
