Eastern Hognose Photos?

WDeptula Jul 15, 2010 07:19 PM

No offense intended to all of you very fine breeders of Western Hogs as I think you produce some remarkable snakes, but I believe that Easterns are so much more variable and interesting. Trust me, I fully understand the alleged Western husbandry advantages and assorted available morphs as reasons for their popularity and their dominance on this forum. That said, LET'S SEE SOME EASTERN PHOTOS!

It is really impressive the way the western morphs have taken off. But its hard to beat the natural beauty of a nice eastern. Some of you have seen the last pic before.

Beautiful snake, Bert. The western morphs and color phases are interesting but that eastern blows them all away, IMO.

Awesome snake!! Too bad the eastern are such a pain in the @$$ to acclimate and propagate in captivity. I think that is the sole reason they aren't more popular. I can't even remember the last time I saw c.b. babies for sale.

The snake in the pics was a wc adult. I had absolutely zero problems acclimating him to captivity. Even outh of the bag he never refused a meal. As long as there were toads involved he was happy. I doubt I would have ever successfully switched him to rodents. Which is the biggest hurdle we face with H. platyrinos. I have heard of a KS member here in FL that has her E's on a rodent diet but I'm sure it wasnt easy.

Actually, as I understand it, all of her easterns are on exclusively rodent diets.

It's been many years but I have seen WC easterns take unscented rodents as their first meal in captivity.

Yup, have a yearling that has only been in captivity since February of this year, and he wolfs down unscented mouse hoppers for me now. Getting easterns on rodents is not that difficult, just requires patience and some "magic" tricks LOL! Biggest hurdle with easterns is the parasite load that most do not know how to treat or what to look for. Simple fecals do not work with these guys.
