difference between patternless and blizzard

weiside Sep 24, 2003 02:18 AM

What's the difference between patternless and blizzard leopard geckos? Are the genes compatible with each other? I have a patternless female, so with a male blizzard would they produce all patternless or blizzards? They look very similar.

Thanks

Hey Wei,
Patternless tend to be more yellow and they turn brown every once in a while, Blizzards tend to be white and they turn gray every once in a while. There are banana blizzards as well that look exactly like patternless, its a bit confusing. A patternless and a blizzard is compatible in the sense that you can breed them to each other, but if you breed them, you wont get any patternless or blizzard babies. You will get normal looking babies with spots that are double hets for patternless blizzards. Hope that helps.
BTW you got a awesome site, I checked out your leopard gecko pics and I noticed that you were keeping your geckos on woodchips. I suggest that you change your form of bedding becuase woodchips will cause impaction if it's consumed by your geckos.

So, exactly what IS a Banana Blizzard. By the original def it is a double homozygous Patternless Blizzard. This is what I would say is the proper def of this trait combination. Prehistoric Pets coined this and defined it a couple of years ago.

I have noticed of late that a lot of breeders are selling what they are calling a "banana" blizzard with no claims of genetics. These are just VERY yellow blizzards that I like to call "Yellow Snow" Blizzards. They are just blizzards that are not white, no Patternless genes there at all. I think this is misleading as I have had to assist several people deal with breeders that were doing this and did not help the customer understand the differenct.

Why recycle a known term? Why not call them Lemon Blizzards to remove the confusion and association with the genetic Patt Bliz? Is this a purposeful attempt at deception to bump the price up? I hope not. Does this make any sense to anyone else?

My other big gripe about this is that even though Patternless has a huge color range there are not premium prices paid. Why is it that the so called "midnights" and non-genetic "banana" blizzards go for more than regular blizzards? I personally find the black and yellow blizzards undesirable.

Buyers beware and ask lots of questions.

"Yellow Snow" Blizzards, I like that...

"Don't eat the yellow snow!"

There are some true double homozygous patternless blizzards out there, however Steve is correct, virtually all the blizzards marketed as "bananas" are just high yellow blizzards. They are usually very pretty geckos but NOT a true double recessive animal.

I do not know how much they are going for actually. Personally, I would not pay any more for one of them than a Patternless Albino, probably 25% less. But that is just me. I would certainly want to get a written guarantee that it was genetically double homo prior to purchasing though.
