First time at breeding:

PhunkeyPhish Jul 17, 2010 11:07 AM

Having my ball python and also seeing pictures of my friend's piebalds he hatched this year has made me really want to get into breeding. At the moment I'm just looking to learn, have fun, and hopefully make enough money selling hatchlings and a breeder to expand next season. So here is my plan, what do you guys think?
I have a male normal now, want to get a mature female spider and female pastel to cross with the normal. Then hopefully get a 1.0 pastel to cross with the mothers to hopefully get bumbles and super pastels my second season.
Thoughts, suggestions?
Thanks.

You'd be spending a huge chunk of change to pick up the two breeding size females you want. At that point why not toss in the small amount extra it would take for a yearling pastel male and jump right to what you want to make? A male pastel is chump change compared to a breeding size female pastel or female spider. I'd keep the male normal as a sentimental pet, but not use him for breeding. Just my opinion.

Agreed! I've seen pastel males sell for $50-75 lately. They are so cheap! Here's what I would do (and really depends on how much time and money you want to put into this hobby)...

I would pick up '09 spider & pastel females and a '10 pastel male this year. If you feed right, by '11 your girls just might be big enough to breed to the pastel male. You'd have the ability to make pastels, spider, super pastels, bees and of course normals.

I would not bother breeding a normal male to (what would be) such expensive females when male co-doms are dirt cheap right now and you'd be making much nicer (ie worth more money) babies much quicker.

Yeah, after thinking about it I agree with you guys. I'm actually waiting to pick up an '08 female spider right now. Guy wants 275 for her, trying to get down to 250.
Plan is to get the male pastel next, and then try to get '08 female pastel before the season begins.
Thanks for the suggestions!

imho if some person has an 08 spider female for $275 and it's not a runt that only weighs 300g it is a steal at that price. heck I have a couple 09 animals that I wouldn't take that price for, lol. either way, good luck with your projects.

IMO, even a pastel male could be upgraded. I would start with atleast a Mojave myself, but if your goal is Super Pastels and Bees, go for the Pastel Good luck getting started! A couple words of wisdom... 1, this hobby is addicting! and 2, patience is a must

I would think for an 08 to make breeding weight this year, it would have to be close to or above 800g. It seems most 800 gram female morphs are going for closer to $400 . Most spider females I have seen have been up there in price so $275 is no doubt a steal, maybe even TOO good to be true......kind of makes you think she may be a picky eater or something else. Good luck!

I saw this spider on sale a month or more ago. When I searched and e-mailed the guy he said he still had her and was originally asking 350, but would take 275 if I bought that day. The flake hasn't answered his phone though, so not sure what the hell is going on. He sent pictures of her and made that deal, so I don't think he is scamming me, wouldn't get anything out of it except sick pleasure. If I ever pick her up I'll post some pics of her.
