Gulf Hammock Kingsnake - Yearling

foxturtle Jul 18, 2010 05:15 AM

This is one of my holdbacks from the group I hatched last year.

Even though is from a definite floridana intergrade population, I could probably pass this one off as a straight eastern king. What do you think?

Beautiful! I know next to nothing, but those side "windows" do look more floridana to me.

Also, did you come across gulf hammock rat snakes out there? Those are my favorite rat snakes.

FoxTurtle Jul 18, 2010 03:24 PM

They are a common feature of Florida kings, but there are a lot of examples of pure easterns that have them, too.

This is a pure eastern I hatched last week:

Plenty of side windows, and has the same band count as the above kingsnake.

I do catch Gulf Hammock rat snakes in the same area as the kings. Some have been real nice looking, too.

CrimsonKing Jul 18, 2010 11:09 AM

No. I do not think you could pass it off as an eastern.

Looks more Eastern than Florida. Take it to Daytona and sell it as an Eastern and I'm sure most of those people won't know or care.

CrimsonKing Jul 18, 2010 03:58 PM

....but why would you want to purposely misrepresent your animals?

Ahh HA HA ..AHHHh HA HA! aaAAhAHHHHH HAA HA HAA!

Actually it is not funny because it's true. I have had people sell me easterns and later found out they were wide banded 50% Apalachicolas. Some people Still call these a wide band "S. GA locale". Ho~Ho, NOW THAT"S FUNNY!. Cause if they're from GA then they are illegal to pocess anyway. Aint that a hoot!

but I gotta give you 2 points for putting the time in to set up a boardline. Do you think if i drove around down there i could find some of your bordlines? If so (mums the word, shhhhh) , I maybe have about a hundred spare multi het 'males' that i couold cull out for a neat cuase.. They are just surplus and need a place to stay.. Maybe it would be fun to come back in ten years and find out Brian Hubbs book wasn't so good after all.lol!

Just given ya a ribbin Sean. Its been a while since you came out from hiding. I am on your side. I Really am! I just prefer to go it alone. No, I am not one of your BreakBack mtn herpin buddies. But cheerz, NOT that there is anything wrong with that! (_!^~@*()!

it is black like an eastern but the pattern tells it is floridana. No doubt about it.

here in GA we have some biologists at the Dept of agricuture that would say that is an eastern. Being that eastern are illegal to keep here it would be confiscated and the keeper fined.

Sory but I would give it all to live in Hawaii. I did before. For 5 years. I bred torts and phelsuma. It is not bad as you can learn from other reptiles this way besides snakes..

But i agree, Georgia sucks. However the same thing is happening all over the nation. real soon our hobby will be all but a sweet memory. Enjoy it while you can kids!

Though it is not a right to keep snakes like guns are. It would be great if someone could photo shop this pic and in place of the gun put a snake.

We need something like the NRA to represent us.

Texas has it's charms but I'm debating moving back north in a few years--maybe I'll give Wyoming a go. I miss mountains. Of course, give it a decade there and I'll miss the plains!

BlueKing Jul 19, 2010 12:11 AM

I agree. Nice pic Rainer...
I just cannot understand why our Government only wants criminals to have guns (by forcing us to become criminals if we want to keep guns)....
Too me guns are like snakes (when it comes to possession): I will always have a snake as a pet if I so choose to do so. Even if I live in snake hating state like Georgia, I will even keep LOCAL snakes as pets if I choose to do so. I just won't tell no one. If I am a RESPONSIBLE pet keeper no one would EVER know anyway (ie. no escapes, no releases, no talking about it to neighbors). That's how this whole mess of controlling reptiles (as pets), got started in the first place: IRRESPONSIBLE pet owners scaring snake hating people with bad (media) news of snakes: Accidental escapes in residential areas, releases, bragging, keeping snakes that they can't control ( 20 foot Anacondas, Pythons, poisonous snakes that bite their careless owners).
And the only reason they have a permit system in most states is, so for a small fee you can tell on yourself as well as allow the government access to your property anytime they wish so they can infringe on your personal life even more so......By not allowing Government free reign on my personal property it is nearly impossible to EVER get caught!!!
Today's liberal Government is OUT OF CONTROL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, by the way, I do have Eastern Kingsnakes in my house. I even have Eastern Indigos in my house...But I don't live in a control-freak, easily-scared state like Georgia which is scared of little Kingsnakes and scared of their own state flag)!!!
Okay back to the topic: YES, 99.99 percent of wildlife officers would tell you that snake is 100% Eastern King. (BTW: Nice pic of your snake Nick!) Of course, the rest of us can see many hints that it is not 100% Eastern....
Here IS a pic of a 100% Eastern Chain-king....

Don't misrepresent it. Sell it for what it is. I'd rather have a locality intergrade than a generic any day. Besides, aren't kings rare in the Gulf?

FoxTurtle Jul 19, 2010 12:17 AM

I was only commenting on the snake's general appearance. I put a lot of field work into collecting this snake's parents, and I have no intention of misrepresenting anything. There really wouldn't be any advantage to doing so.

Kings are rare throughout most of the Gulf Hammock, but if you know where and how to look for them, you can find them.

KevinM Jul 19, 2010 02:06 PM

Foxturtle, very interesting and beautiful animal. I am just delving into the eastern kings and have a pair of juvie appalachicola kings ("goini" I purchased plus a male eastern king I adopted. I would agree with you in the fact the animal you posted looks like an eastern king to me, and not floridana. Where does the line of integradation end? More or less a rhetorical question, but one that has gotten my curiousity up LOL!!

FoxTurtle Jul 19, 2010 03:34 PM

Along the West Coast of Florida, the official word is that intergrade kings start showing up as far south as Pinellas County, and as far north as the Dixie/Taylor County line. Florida king influence may even go north of that line, as the area in general is poorly studied.

I've found Eastern kings in areas of the northern peninsula and eastern panhandle where there could be trace influence from both floridana and "goini". These were still basically Eastern kings and you wouldn't call them any different, but there were what looked like subtle hints of influence from those two other subspecies. It is nothing definitive, but I like the idea of a natural 3-way intergrade.

KevinM Jul 19, 2010 04:51 PM

It appears that Florida in general produces some unique and awesome eastern clan getulas for sure!! I have always been a fan of the goini, and recently looking at some of the S. GA wide banded eastern makes me go Hmmmm.... I will not ever breed my eastern to my goini, but I sure am interested in what my hatch out LOL!!

FoxTurtle Jul 19, 2010 06:11 PM

Florida is a very frustrating place when it comes to getula. Even though some of the best forms live in FL, FL is also one of the toughest states to hunt getula (except in the canefields).

I'm not opposed to crosses, but I agree in that I would probably avoid doing and eastern/goini cross. I'm sure they would look nice, but I don't think the cross would produce anything you couldn't achieve by breeding the subspecies pure.
