question about the boa market

James W. Arnold May 26, 2003 01:19 AM

I have a question about how we "boa people" price our boas. It seems that any new ball python morphs go for $25,000 ea. why don't we see new boa morphs selling this high? Why is it that co dom traits cost as much or cheaper then recessive traits? Why are the double het morphs selling in what I think being relativity cheap compared to the ball pythons. One could argue that boas produce more offspring but I don't see how that could be a true factor. How many times have your boas slug out? How many times have you bred them without the female becoming gravid? We all know that it is rare, if possible to find a female that will breed and take year after year. I have been thinking about this for some time and would like others to tell what they think about the subject.

Thanks,
James W. Arnold

YOU GUYS'VE BEEN TRYIN'TO RIP ME OFF!!!!! *lol*(please don't take this the wrong way James, actually, you bring up some very good points!),I just couldn't resist what I thought was a funny responseand,I've always assumed that many of the B.P.'s that don't look much different than the ones I used to see in the pet stores, simply weren't selling for what the broker was asking!(and, crack must be a much stronger, mind altering drug than what we had when I was growing up!) I think you're right,in that it's much easier to assure breeding success, consistantly, albeit in significantly smaller numbers, with B.P.'s compared to boas...some of the mutations in B.P.'s are obviously stunningly unique...errr,while others are...well,uhmm,"less obvious" in their stunning uniqueness?(*clears throat*)many people have bi-ched about the boa market becoming like the B.P. market, however,I don't see imported"circle-back-ladder-tails",or,"Mohave slate-grey,diamond-sides" goin' for 25K????(at least not before they're proven dominant!)... I think we got some retro-funds comin'!!!! I'm just waiting to see what happens when someone finally pops up with a piebald boa!(and,Pete...if it's you...I'm personally comin' over there and, kickin'yer *%!@!!! )I'm just kiddin' Pete....Pete...it's all good man....PEEEETTTE,WAIT UP man!

I have wondered the same things myself... I think the biggest reasoning why the ball python morphs are much more expensive then the boa morphs boils down to ball pythons are the most popular of the boa/python pet trade (alot of first time snake owners get a ball python first) so they become familiar with them and have an attachment to them, so when that person grows up and has more money to spend they are more willing to spend 1000 to 1500 on a pastel bp, or 2500-3500 for an albino ball python, rather then spending the 200-800 for a pastel boa, or 800-1500 for an albino boa.. ( you can look at it this way, how many of you have an albino bci or anery bci, but do not consider getting an albino kenyan or an axanthic kenyan, even though they are cheaper and also cool looking pretty snakes?) Later all Randy T.

Interesting thread. I think the albino BCIs are cheap, but I can't quite afford one yet. I have 2 young het for albino boa pairs. I also have several of the Kenyan morphs, and they are really cool and beautiful boas. One anery is gravid now hopefully. I had a colony of BCI about 25 years ago and was able to breed one pair once. Not a lot was known about breeding boas back then, at least by me. Frank
