I would like some opinions on these eggs

jamesalternafan Jul 19, 2010 02:39 PM

Its my first ball python clutch. Albino to albino so I hope things go good. Anyway I am not sure if they are progressing well. I do my colubrid eggs in perlite but heard that putting the eggs on that egg crate over standing water was the thing to do for pythons.

Should I switch them to perlite of something else? Does anyone have an recommendations or suggestions on what I should do or if this will work.

How long have they been in the incubator ? do they still candle ok? They look fine from the picture.

They candle fine. I was just concerned because my king snake eggs do not have any dimples or wrinkles and stay firm and plump the whole time. They have been in the incubator for about two weeks.

This type of setup seems much drier than perlite and my concern is that they are drying out.

Might just be my inexperience with ball pythons.

Treat'em like a kingsnake egg. If there only two weeks they are alittle dry. Do You put water fairly close to the grate? or maybe You have to big of air holes if any, I don't use air holes or just plain water I would put the eggs on a egg crate like they are and add perlite to the bottom and then add some more water, and then return the eggs back on top of it all. It will take afew days for those eggs to be plump again

One side of the egg crate is dry the bottom half is touching the surface of standing water. I thought they would start to plump back up after being laid but it seems like they might be drying out more.

The only thing I can think of is maybe my lid does not fit tight enough. Can I just put plastic wrap on the container for the lid or should I switch containers completely.

If they start to get worse in the next couple of days I am gonna switch them over to a perlite setup.

Thanks for everyones help.

Yeah i use plastic wrap on the top on mine...and i used to have them air tight, but now i put one small hole at the top of the side and another small hole in the side that is just above the perlite level inside of the box.(That way there is at least a small method of gas exchange going on.Without letting out the moisture that the eggs need.)

Go ahead and get some perlite because it has two pluses..One is the it helps with evaporation since it breaks the surface tension of the water..,and two it makes a great surface to "float" the plastic grate on..You want it to act as a snowshoe does, and with that said you now know how much water to add in.(Since to much water will let the plastic sink into the over-saturated perlite.)

Plus with the showshoe thing going on it makes it possible to tilt the boxes so that the water doesn't drip down onto the eggs from the inside ceiling of the box,yet maintain that level suface for the eggs themselves.

they look ok....

once eggs set and are at a humidity or setup for awhile...changing things can make it worse....
read that in Barker's book...first I saw it and just didn't hear it or do it....and yes I proved it....more than once....

so....make sure the temps are 90 and the water under them does not touch them ever....

good luck....

how many days into it are they?....

How many Days are they? I use Perlite uder the grate anyway, it keeps the water from spashing around. The one egg is a dud and I can't tell on the others. Did You candle them and see Veins? If so put some perlite in there and add alittle more water. Just like the other eggs You cook.. Hope that helped

The yellow egg is a dud, the rest look fine. Don't expect ball eggs to look as smooth and white and perfect as kingsnake eggs.
