Coxi laybox egg size comparison

robyn@ProExotics Jul 19, 2010 04:19 PM

Took this pic today while the incubator was open. A female had just dropped the clutch on the left, 9 eggs. That is a large clutch for the Coxi (and other porphs) but not a record size.

The interesting thing is the egg size variability to the other Coxi clutches in the box. There are four clutches total.

In clutch two, the eggs are literally twice as large as the eggs in clutch 4. Those three eggs are the size equivalent of SIX eggs in the larger clutch. I find that kind of thing fascinating : )

That is really interesting, thanks for sharing! Are those 4 clutches all from different females?

Yes, those are different females.

Here is an older pic with the most extreme example of Coxi egg size. Different females, but same species, and all of these hatched healthy babies. Crazy : )

How different in size were the hatchlings and how did they grow?

Robyn,

Were the females that laid the longer eggs smaller or skinnier than the female that laid the clutch of nine?

I've noticed that some younger and skinnier females will lay longer and fewer eggs, and that older bigger, females will lay larger clutches with shorter rounder eggs. You've gotta fit that baby in there somehow and longer skinnier eggs seems like a good way to do it.

I'd be interested to know the weight difference between an average egg in the clutch of nine and one of the longest eggs.

Great stuff Robyn!

Can't wait to see the youngster after the hatches!
