sexing hatchlings......

dan felice Sep 24, 2003 07:57 AM

i don't know that this applies to indigos, though i suspect it would but.....i have found that you can very accurately sex cribo hatchlings by merely going by their heads. the females heads are noticeably slimmer and smaller as compared to the males which seem almost block-headed by comparison. they are all born approx. the same size initially but the the difference in head size is already in place. anyone ever notice/use this before? it seems to be an extremely reliable tool........

I never really gave this much thought until your post and I deecided to take a look at a few of my hatchlings that I am holding back....and you are right although it is very subtle in my babies! Now, I am only looking at two females and a male but I will be taking a closer look next year when I have more hatchlings. Of course, I will still probe/pop just to be on the safe side but if this is indeed a physiological difference between sexes it would sure prevent stress on the animal. Thanks for the suggestion (anyone else see this same trend?).
