Drawer for Cambro box

markg Jul 20, 2010 03:17 PM

This is a one-hole rack I guess you can say. I made a few of these with mostly scrap odds and ends I had. I used straight pine and PVC. The box is suspended on extruded aluminum angle.

Next time I'm going all aluminum for the frame. I have a feeling the cost for the extruded aluminum and fittings is going to be alot. I should probably just purchase Freedom Breeders and be done with it. But then, where is the fun?

Nothing beats the cambro box for viewing...

My next hatchling racks will be cambro boxes.

Do you have some pictures of the angle

Great idea

markg Jul 21, 2010 06:05 PM

No, but you can find it at Home Depot or Lowes. It is 3/4 inch by 1/2 inch angle. I use two 21-inch pieces in this assembly. The box lip slides on the 1/2 inch angle width, which is perfect for this box.

The box is roughly 10 inches x 20 inches inside diameter. Pretty much the floorspace of a 10 gal tank, without the height. These boxes do not break under even abnormal usage, and their dimensions are spot on. Plus, they do not smell "plastic-y" at all, even when heated. The drawback of course is the cost per box. Ouch if you need alot of them.

Do they come in other sizes?

markg Jul 22, 2010 02:30 PM

Yes. They come in roughly 5x10 and 10x10 floor area. The 10x10 make great baby boa boxes. The 5x10 are good for baby sandboas, etc.

With the 10x10 boxes, I just purchased the clear rigid lids and clip them on with binder clips. With the 10x20 boxes, it wasn't secure enough, so I made the drawer units.

Did you drill the angle or how is it attached to the top. Not sure if you mentioned it and I missed it

Head-on view. Not to scale, but you get the idea.

Top of the angle to the drawer inside top is about 5/16 inch.
