Ultimate Rack System

McCarthyBoas Jul 20, 2010 11:04 PM

Here is the rack system I will make someday for myself if I ever take my hobby out of my home and make it my fulltime job. For now it's only a dream but here are some pictures of a mobile file system I have installed. As you can see this would make the "Ultimate Rack System" Just think....you would have 3 times the cage space in the same room you have now! Just add the tubs to the shelving. The shelving can be raised in 1" increments and come in many different sizes. The carriages can be made to any size, so I can even use my existing Freedom Breeder racks and wire rack system on the carriages. This system has hand cranks to move the carriages, but I can also have electric switches that will move any or all the carriages for me automatically. End panels can be made to match my home or office decor if I want.

Take care

I have used a process that worked like that years ago in a baby rack room that had a center peninsula of racks that had to be rolled to the left to work the right isle and right to work the left isle. It worked well. However, my isles are only 32" wide Tom. In order to "triple" my usable space, my isles would have to be more than twice as wide as the space taken up by peninsulas of cages, or more than triple the space I have allowed my slender self. Oh to have the luxury of 10-12' wide isles! I could turn around without having to back out of an isle! LOL

This concept for me now, would allow about 20% more cage space. Still, I do love the idea and the uniformity of the look! THe ultimate in space utilization.

Hi Jeff,

You would only need one or two isles instead of 6 or more isles. So you would have all the room you would need to make the isle as big as you want. Here is a drawing / picture of a file system but is show how much space you can get with something like this.

Couple of thoughts......

Ventilation? While they don't need a lot of ventilation, some is necessary and would have to be provided.

Water? All the rolling back and forth could lead to excessive water sloshed out of the water bowls, even more than the snakes spill already?

Electricity, would need overhead power with a system to allow cords to move back and forth without getting pinched.

Are those racks really designed to roll back and forth every day?

I saw a smaller setup in a vets office a while back and had similar thoughts.

Yes they are designed to roll back and forth all day if need be. The automatic one's already have electric run to them so all that would be needed is to install some outlets on each unit where you would need them. The shelving is open on both sides of the unit so if you have a good ventilation system in the room it should be fine. Am sure if you needed to you could add some small fans in each unit to help with the ventilation. These units do roll very smooth so I don't think the water would slosh much more than it does with opening the draws in the racks now.
