Help, advice needed!

snakekate Jul 21, 2010 11:24 AM

I have a 3 year old female cali king, she was bred the biggining of june. About 4 days ago she dropped a slug(outside of her designated egg boxes, of which she has 2 one with potting soil and the other vermiculite)My first thought was egg binding, but she has been very active almost nonstop the last day or two bouncing between both egg boxes, digging but essentially spending the most time digging in the one with soil. She had her pre natal shed about 7 days ago. She is showing no signs of pain or exhaustion, is alert and active non stop but still no eggs. Everything seems normal except for the one slug she laid, which is totally stumping me...and weather or not I should take her to the vet or wait it out. Any advice would be really appreciated, especially if anyone has delt with this before. Also, she is still very thick in her back half with no signs of hard lumps or blockages near her vent.

It is not unusal for females to pass slugs prior to laying the remainder of their clutches. They know these are not good eggs and thats typically why they are laid randomly outside the nest boxes. Its usually an indication she is close to laying the remainder of the fertile clutch soon. Be alert to her actions, but I dont think there is an immediate issue at hand. She should pass the rest of her clutch soon in the suitable nest box of her choice. Good luck!!!

Yeah I had one drop 3 duds and then lay a good healthy clutch. So don't panic yet, lol. She'll probably be fine.

My kings lay their eggs 10 days after shedding. It's very common for them to be restless from the time they shed until the time they lay their eggs. Usually on day nine they settle into the nestbox and that's a pretty good indication that there will be eggs the following day.

As Kevin said, it's not uncommon for females to throww infertile eggs ouside the nestbox prior to laying their main clutch of eggs.
