"flawless" kingsnake?

irvington Jul 21, 2010 04:58 PM

When we were kids my friend found a cal king with no broken bands. every ring was connected perfectly. We'd seen probably 30 kings and never one without atleast one or two broken bands. Are these very rare and sought by breeders?

I'm expecting my first clutch so I should know before releasing it to the wild instead of giving to a breeder.

Also are striped cal kings odd balls that just come from regular common kings, or you have to breed two stripes together?

I don't know how rare they are, but I sought one out and found one quickly from Shannon on here, cost me a little extra.

There isnt as much call for "perfect" banding as you'd think. After you have had some, they start to look pretty much alike. More people like the oddball types, the abbarrancies. Breeding a "perfect" with a "perfect" makes a pretty boring clutch, oddball/oddball you will end up with a range of different types. You can then take the oddest of that bunch and make something different. Its the striving to be different that defines most snake breeders, and the more different types there are the more accomidating the hobby is to more and more keepers. If we were stuck with only nominant forms think of where the hobby would be now.....

. What is much more valuable is its locality information. herpetoculture has gone so far with captive bred gentics that you can hardly ever find a w/c animal to be worth anithing.. But...

There are localiity freaks out there that like to breed a cal king from the exact area to another. that is where your clucth could be valuable to a "breeder'. there is no doubt your neonates will be 100% pure locality as the female you found was gravid when you found her.

What you have there is better than what most locality guys have and consider to be a locality specimen by catching a cal from one part of the county/hill, road, on the other side of town etc and then another and matching them up. there is no question those babies you will get are from one NATURAl locality.

So what is the locality of your kingsnake? County , city, road?

NEVER, I and I do mean NEVER, post coordinates to hunting spots online! You may have lost your little hunting spot to other collectors.

Bluerosy Jul 22, 2010 09:55 AM

jeff,

It was not a collecting spot. It was a resucue off a side of a road. Relax.

right. i didn't give away the release spot. thats the real gem.
this spot as you can see is farm land in every direction. I been here 4 years and only seen like 2 gophers DOR.

I was actually going to make a disclaimer NOT to go cause you wont find jack haha. follow up to the foothills from hwy 46/famoso might pay off though. always wanted to try the green horns out here for some rubber boa's.
