Been away since 2000

I have been out of the hobby for about 10 years and am thinking about heading to Alpine next spring. I used to go once or twice per season and walk the cuts and after reading some of the posts here figured I had better check in and see what has changed. Is the small game permit still available and what sort of harassment is happening in the west? Is it still safe to walk the cuts south and west of Alpine?
I got nailed in the Gap around '99 I believe and was made an example of so I am kind of familiar with the way things work.

Current laws on the books make the take of any animal on a public right of way (roads, shoulders, easements, etc) illegal. However you can still get out and photo or observe, but not "hunt". Hunting is only available on private land as the public lands available for "game" hunting are still closed to herping to this day.

I didn't get an email that someone responded so I am back for more. I want to make sure I am hearing you right, the law was changed since 2000 and they eliminated the ability to walk, not drive, but walk road cuts with a light and small game permit? If so that must of made a lot of alterna collectors and small businesses in the area like motels and burger bins real happy.

Never mind, I guess your answer about covers it, I just couldn't believe that something as harmless as walking cuts would ever be banned. I hope the local businesses are raising Hell.
Without having to do a bunch of searching is there any hope for us hunters? Any change in the works maybe?
