And as you pointed out in the video people should try different variations of this technique either by letting go, holding onto the snake, put him in a dark box etc. Bsically experimnt if one thing does not work try something else.

I used to have to tease feed rosys boas when i had a large collection of those. But with rosys I had to let go as they would go into contriction mode. But then I had to leave the room because any distraction (movement) they would crawl away from the pinky after letting go.

Yeah people should try any variation untill they get success. I would like to stree that cutting the head of a dead pinky and squeezing some matter out works probably 80% with stuborn babies. And you should leave the tease feed till brain feeding or scent feeding has failed many times. I don't like to feed whole lizards cause of parasites. But lizard tails stuck in the mout of a dead pinky should be ok.

Two obvious questions remain unanswered.

Did the snake finish the pinky or let go?

Did your wife forgive you for not answering the phone?

No the snake did not finnish eating that day. But did a couple days later. I still have two of those little buggers that will only eat brain fed pinkies and fuzzies one year later. The others are all eating on their own. I called my wife back and all wnet well. After all I have the video as proof, lol.

I have had to do this with my Nephew's Ball Python and then He picked up on the technique. Though it's not 100%, it usually works.

I'd tried tease feeding but not holding her while I do it. we'll see if that works. I hope so.

I hold the hatchling right behind the head. I use a F/T pink. Once it bites on the pinky, I make sure it has started to eat, then I slowly loosen my grip and put the hatchling down in its shoebox.

Yeah if it is obviously starting to swallow then that's good But these Thayeri have proved to be the hardest snakes I've ever bred, to start them eating pinks. I bred Gray Bands years ago and some gave me a tough time but not like these guys have. Like I said one year later two of them will only eat split brain! But at least they are eating.

I will definatly try that b4 braining or scenting with tough to find lizards with my greyband babies. Thanx for tip. Dave.

a153fish Jul 25, 2010 08:27 AM

I would try the split brain method first. It works a great percentage of the time, then if you must go ahead and try this method.

Hey...I saw this on another site a while back....LOL

Great info for those that do not know how to tease feed.....Although there are a few takes on tease feeding itself.....

I have a 12 step process (not AA) I go through with all my stubborn feeders.....Tease feeding is down on the list towards the bottom.....Right before force feeding or brumating.....As I think tease feeding causes some stress.....

Scenting numerous ways, feeding lizard or snake parts and braining (f/t and live) are the best, stress free methods....in my opinion.......

only I don't like to feed lizards cause of high probability of prasitic infection. Of course freezing the lizards should kill the parasites I guess.

Mr. Lassiter, as I work with often-obnoxious babies year after year. I tend to save that also for the bottom of the repertoire list of feeding strategies, however it's important to illustrate because it is indeed a visual thing and can be done w/ some variation (i.e. allowed that inch and a half behind the head versus grabbing righ behind the head, etc). Nicely done.....and put a battery in that smoke alarm!.....BEEP!!! LOL

I did mention in this thread that tease feeding should be left to almost a last resort, just before force feeding. But I wish I would have said something in the actual video. I may still be able to add annotations to that effect. After I go to bed and wake up again, I will try to add some warning in a bubble or something. Oh by the way you have excellent hearing! That thing drives my sister nuts when she visits, I am completely oblivious of it. I did replace the battery but it's been doing that chirp noise for years.

And I thought it was just ME......I had the same thing happen a while back and even though I replaced the dang 9volt, it STILL beeped incessantly. LMAO. So, as the average guy would do, I smacked it off the wall and eventually replaced it with a new one.

I did not visit the link or read what others wrote. I am only going by your post. So spank me if this is already mentioned or WRONG

Baby snakes are not stubborn. They are mistreated, its the keepers that are stubborn.

These snakes, all of them, have set requirements to support their lifes. Ifs thats met in nature or in captivity, they feed, grow, reproduce, ALL OF THEM. That is their design to successfully exsist.

The key is WHAT are the conditions that support them to successfully exsist. With reptiles, its not their metabolism that does that, its external conditions that their behavior seeks, that supports them. For instance, baby snakes are hatched or born in suitable conditions, chosen by the mother. If not, they die, as in, unsuitable. Once hatched or born, then their behavior allows them to find food and shelter in these areas picked by their mother.

If this were mammals or birds and you had babies that would not feed, you would blame yourself. But because these are reptiles, you blame the animals. As in, they are stubborn and will not do what you want them to do. how about looking at it another way. They are cold blooded and REQUIRE their enviornment to allow them to function properly. Its up to you to not be stubborn and for you to keep trying new ways to support their needs.

above I mentioned that female snakes are very prejudiced about where they place their eggs. We dumb humans think its only to allow the eggs to hatch, but that is very naive. The females place their eggs in certain places to not only hatch, but in areas that will support the neonates until they attain some size. So these places are to support requirement, that is, to hatch and have the highest chance of reaching aduldhood.

What I find odd is, we incubate eggs one way then move the babies to different conditions and wonder why they get picky. Cheers

a153fish Jul 27, 2010 05:58 PM

You are trying to brand my approach as, "not taking into consideration the individual needs of a given animal". Yet I am not coming at the problem from that side at all. I am looking at things thru the eyes of a hobbyist or breeder. These animals would most likely take lizards as their first meals even in captivity. However I know that they will spend their lives in confined cages which would exacerbate the problem of a parasitic load which they could easily acquire from these natural foods, i.e., lizards. If my intent was to meet their natural requirements to the hilt, I would let them go. If I let them go, then this debate would be pointless. I am forcing them to take pinkies because it will be best for them under the un-natural conditions they will have to live in.
