First Suriname litter ever!

AdamBotond Jul 24, 2010 05:35 AM

This morning my Adult WC Suri gave birth to 16 big babies. No slugs or still borns. She has been under my care since 2002, when I obtained her and the male as a juvenile. After several unsuccessful years, so many experiance, better understanding of their reproduction, I ended up with this healthy litter.
I must admit, I'm grateful to Gus and Vincent. Their work with true redtails motivated me even in the harsh times. And believe me there were plenty of that.
In 2006 this female underwent a serious surgery. We wanted to test her for IBD, but the surgery turned out to be a massarce almost. The "specialized" vet made an almost 3ft long cut on the ventral surface, when whis female was about 7 ft long. I would detail the knowledge of this vet (Maybe I would be able to do so, as I'm also a vet student). Anyway, the female turned out IBD-negative. Ironically, the way how the vet found that out, almost took the female's life. We spent the next 1-1,5 years with curing of this huge wound. There was an enormous hernia remaining from the previous surgery, therefore she underwent another one to correct this. Well, it was... half-successful. The hernia didn't disappear, but she was starting to gain some weight and her overall conditon was good. After all these things she has been through, it was a wonder that she was physically able to reproduce. This year, from the very begining of the stimulations until the birth, she was supervised. During the gravidity, I paid much attention to sufficient temperature and feeding with moderate sized preys. Finally, today she droped these babies after 107 days (POS).
Hope you like them!

Congratulations, that's quite a trooper you got there.

Very awesome story Adam. We had a similar thing happen with a female but not near as bad. No surgery or nothing just a little trooper like your girl. We rescued a Columbian female that had been kept in cedar shavings for 2 years. She was mildly poisoned and we quarantined her for months. She ended up making a complete recovery and producing a perfect litter of 21 perfect babies no slugs or stills.

It really feels good when you give an animal so much hard work and get the ultimate pay off. A big beautiful litter of boas to play in. Congrats and great job with that girl. It speaks highly of your husbandry skills.

She's fine. Lost some weight, but not as much as I thought, since she was fed on throughout her gravidity. She will be offered a moderate size rat in the next days. I'm planning to give her a rest in the next season. Thanks for looking!

Take care,
Adam
