male gecko question

breen7 May 26, 2003 02:53 AM

I noticed that males have a very pronounced and bulgy vent-thing (I'm not sure exactly how it's called..hemepene?). I also saw a picture of a male that exposed himself (the thing...came out!) for seemingly no reason.

My question is what is the difference between owning a female vs. a male? What about the various vent-related problems/experiences will a male-crested-gecko owner go through that an owner of a female gecko wouldn't experience?

The bulgy places are called hemipenal bulges. The things stored in them are called hemipenes. If you see one, you can say 'Look! A hemipenis!'. Hemipenes serve the same purpose that single penes do in mammals such as yourself :P.
The only possible problem would be a hemipenal prolapse, where they stick one out and can't get it back in. This is pretty rare and seems to occur mainly with breeding.
Other than that I don't think there's a big personality difference between male and female geckos. But I do think you were lucky to see your gecko 'evert', I've never seen that.
