regurgitation

wbcrows Jul 24, 2010 05:43 PM

Ok, just purchased a baby hypo bloodred corn , she ate a pinky after being home 3 days. The next week she took two pinkies on Tuesday, today I took her out to handle her for 5 minutes. She threw up both pinkies and neither was digested. I waited almost 4 days to hold her why didn't she digest the pinks? It is very hot here, my house topped out at 86 a number of times this week but on avg about 82

any help will be appreciated, thanks

Don't feed baby snakes two pinkies - feed them one. Two pinkies is too much for a baby snake to digest. Also, do not handle newly acquired baby snakes until they are on a regular feeding schedule (have eaten 5 or 6 times without any problems). Also, too much heat can cause a snake to regurgitate. Snakes need a warm area and a cool area in their enclosure.

Yeah just by your desciption it's hard to really know. A baby corn could be two days old or two months old? A pinky can be the size of a tic tac or the size of a nickle. But more then likely like Tim said it was too big of a meal for your snake. Try smaller meals untill it is a few months old then work your way up. There is alway the possibility that it is sick but don't panic yet, try smaller meals and keep a close eye on the temps. What is the low dropping to? Give us a picture if you can I'd love to see it.

Never feed a snake that has recently regurged. Always wait at least 3 or 4 days for the snake to get it's stomach acids back to normal. If you try feeding right away it will most surely throw up again.

I will try for a pic, never did it before. The hypo br is appears to be at least a month or two old. the low temp in the house has only gone down to 82 due to the heat wave with a high of 86. I def will wait 4 days before attempting a tiny pnk again. Thanks for everyone's help

Maybe wait a week to be sure. Jimmy says 7 to 10 days and I have a feeling he's probably right. I knew you should wait but I was guessing at how long. I haven't had a snake vomit in a long time.

that's good and bad.....
what I mean is...it's not really good not to know but at the same time it is good when you don't know because you haven't had to deal with the problem...lol

7 to 10 days is safer.

Yeah Knock on wood! It's been quite some time I did remember about the waiting though, but numbers and me don't get along, lol.

actually better to wait 7 to 10 days...
but a wait is definitely needed.
check the temps in the enclosure, not the house..and UTH would probably help if the tank is too cool.

7-10 day wait, then small single pinkie, no holding, low 80's, all is well........the end..LOL!

the feeding two pinkies and holding it with a big stomach bulge were definite don't do's!

DO NOT try to feed it in 3 to 4 days!!, it cannot risk another regurge, or it can easily kill it this next time. That takes a huge toll on a tiny hatchlings system. Waiting 7 to ten is MUCH better!. Then, offer it a very SMALL pinkie only. Then after 5 days, give it another small one until it has safely held down small one's for several feedings. ONLY THEN should you graduate to a slightly bigger one, not huge, slightly bigger.............
