demographics of herpers

varanid Jul 24, 2010 11:00 PM

Lots of hobbies skew towards one demographic or another; sometimes the industries involved with these hobbies study this (mostly to determine advertising strategies).
Has anyone heard of or seen a study like that done for herpers, both herpetoculturist and field guys? I've always wondered how broad based our hobby is, and getting a rough sense of the demographics of us would help answer that.

I know Tracy Barker collected information on the women of the industry. You may be shocked to realize that 49% of kingsnake.com users are female. I will check with her to see if she has a full report of what we did this winter.

I will sniff around and see what I can find. If anyone has done anything like this.

holy crap, I am surprised! I'm used to the 'net being something of a sausage fest.
I also wonder if it breaks down by type? More women keep chelonians and amphibians, less women keep snakes sorta thing? That'd be tangential but still neat. I'd love to find out we actually *do* represent a broad cross section of society without a real "demographic" as such.

I just heard some pundit on "Face the Nation" say -- "...the REPTILIAN REPUGNANCE of the Right Wing Republican Party...". I swear. I really did hear it.

That's how America sees us...as Repugnant Reptilian aficionados?

Now, is that fair?

Honestly I am not sure! This I will get with tracy on. I do know that in the blood python community, you do NOT get any more woman driven.

I think part of the difference is we women folk dont need to brag like ya boys.

In all honesty, as long as I have been with Kingsnake, it has been primarily woman based in the moderator staff. We have had 4 woman as site coordinator (including yours truly covering that role).

In my educational outreach I can promise that when faced with a 5 year old boy and a 5 year old girl, girls are more likely to do ANYTHING! It is when society expectations start making a difference that things change. If we can get at the girls before
that happens, they are amazing little sponges....
