i wandered outside a few minutes ago to feed our outdoor cat. for some reason, i just happened to glance up at the eave of our house. there was a small rat snake squeezing between the molding and the wood wall panels (maybe a quarter to half inch gap). my husband was going to pry the molding off while i grabbed the snake, but as we got close, he pulled back up into the attic (i think. i'm not sure if he's in the wall or the attic). i tried to crawl through the attic to reach him, but the combination of heat, arachnophobia, and claustrophobia forced me back out. how do i capture him without having to actually go after him?

we have gaps in the attic where things could get into the house. i don't want him to get down here and get killed by our cats.

If he's found what he thinks is a good spot, personally I'd leave him be. I know you're worried about your indoor cats -- but OTOH, there are predators outside as well (including your outdoor cat). He's not going to be 100% safe no matter where he goes.

even a large rat snake won't kill your cat unless its a kitten

snakes...wild....let it be.... sounds like you might get hurt trying to catch it....

cats..---..cats are to be kept indoors...outdoor cats are to be eaten by coyotes ,foxes, and the neighbor's Rotty....

(or trapped and taken to the humane league)....

.....Have a Nice Day.....

You asked the question. But let me paint a more accurate picture for you. Most of us breeders on this forum produce many low end($CHEAP$)snakes because we love to do it. Our adults are more than likely CB or at least well acclimated and long term specimens. We produce so many that at any show you could literally find the healthy equivalent of your wild snake for $20. NO, I'm not trying to sell you a snake. But if you want a snake as a pet I assure you one of our captive produced would make a much better captive than your wild rat snake. If you are worried about it finding its way in and no way out....believe me thats not going to be a problem. If you want to catch it, just donate some blood at the local blood bank because there is a good chance it will bite and how! Dont forget their musk! Its whats for dinner!
Though its a common snake they are feeling the pressure of the urban sprawl. Its likely even protected in your state. Now I am all for keeping both wc and cb animals, keeping the bloodlines fresh. But I dont think you would have written what you did had you known to "think like a snake". So I'd remember where you saw it last and be on lookout when in that area again, good chance you see it again and can get some cool pics for the wall or this forum. Whatever you decide, be careful not to hurt the animal or get hurt yourself in the attempt.

actually, i just want to move it down to the end of the street into the pecan orchard. georgia has laws to prevent us from owning any native non venomous species.

my actual opinion of wild running foreign killing machines....

...really....shoot them , soak them in quick cure...smoke for 4 hours and slice them with colby cheese onto wheat bread...lightly toasted....

.......or grind into fox bait...

but that would be mean to say out loud....so I was nice....

.....ffffftttt ffffftttt....meow.....

cats are ok...IF they are indoors,or, wild in Africa where they belong, or , cooked properly.....
