Dinker?

Danne Jul 25, 2010 01:11 PM

I saw an ad on craiglist for this male, I definitely don't need another male right now, but I'm wondering if anyone thinks he's just a normal who happens to have a clowny look towards the back or he could have some valuable genetics to him?

I'd say normal.
My personal philosophy is this, and I am sure some will disagree...
but I tend to stay away from male dinkers. If you breed it and nothing happens, you've wasted a female in my opinion.
Now female dinkers...if you breed them to a morph male...the worst that happens is you get normals and morphs. No waste there in my book.

But then again, I am not a big gambler. Many people have gambled with offbeat "normals" and come out on top.

But if you're breeding normals anyway, go for it.

I think it kind of depends on how much room you have for snakes in the end. If you are able to easily house and feed (have you own rat colony/rat barn) and can keep several baby females or the entire 2-3 clutches to raise up & breed back, for the 2-3years it will take to prove out, then it is alot easier. I do not want to keep that many snakes and I buy rats FT online, so I have to be much more selective than someone else might have to be on the dinker projects I want to take on. This is my opinion on the matter anyhow, but everyones situation is a bit different I guess?

I meant to add that I too tend to lean towards female dinkers for this reason Males = More: Time, Space & Cost to me.

Thanks both of you, I didn't even think about that but you're right, especially since I have a pastel it'd be a lot more worthwhile to get only female normals.

I'll still be keeping my eye out for them
