two males together?

robbeardies Jul 25, 2010 04:03 PM

Just to clear the air i've heard and read that two or more males housed together will fight and maybe perhaps kill one another but am open to more opinions and feedback if this is true and if anybody hasd experienced this. I myself have never tried it to play it safe but was wondering if it's a possible option.

I would definitely not attempt it.

I once received 2 males together in a 20L without issues. They were both 20", one weighed 187 and the other weighed 205. Needless to say I think their care was so poor they didn't have the energy to fight with each other. One died a few weeks later but the other is 450 now and very aggressive towards any other male.

I think if they are given the proper care sooner or later there will be a dominance battle. I also have a male that came in with a severely damaged hand because of this. They said that they thought they were male and female and were fine together up until this happened. I had to have his hand completely removed and most of one foot. He does well here though.

Simple answer is no, it is not a possible option.

There is only one instance I have heard of where two males did live together without fighting. They were brothers who were raised together since hatching and there was no female dragon owned or anywhere near the males. However I consider this a very rare exception and considering how fast and deadly dragons can be if they decide they are not compatible, even with male/female or female/female groups, the damage one can do to another in a short period of time, makes it not worth risking putting two males together.

The only other way I can see two males being kept in the same cage without much chance of serious fighting, is if the cage they are in is HUGE..and I don't mean 5'x3' huge...I mean more than twice the size of the minimum recommended size for a single adult dragon, or more...say more like 8'x4'x2' (lxwxh) with plenty of basking areas a good distance from each other and visual barriers...this way the males can keep out of each other's territories...but even then, there is always the chance of a particularly aggressive male still chasing down the other to doing it harm.

As most people don't have a room free that can be converted into a dragon cage for just two dragons...far more practical to have two separate cages, one for each male.
