Savannah obsessed with reflection

monitorman45 Jul 26, 2010 10:51 PM

Hi, my young savannah monitor seems to be obsessed with his reflection. I don't know if that is common or not. At first it seemed funny but now that he does it all day i'm getting kind of nervous. He is in a good sized cage so I don't think he needs more space to run. He just goes up to the glass and follows his reflection around the cage while scratching at it. As I said he is young so maybe he is just curious but I just want to make sure it's ok.

Growing up, I've had plenty of reptiles do this, and giving them better conditions or a bigger cage usually fixed that.
It's because most reptiles have a hard time of making out clear glass, so they just treck and treck and keep trecking along. Sometimes until their face is rubbed raw.
How big of a sav do you have and what size/type of enclosue is it in? Your sav might need more things to do. Does it have tons of deep soil to toss and turn? That'll keep it occupied for a bit.

Post pics of your lizard and cage, maybe we can fix your 'problem'

Hi,
I doubt your bosc is obsessed with its reflection...maybe just under the impression if he scratches/nose rubs enough he will eventually break free. Try covering the sides of your enclosure with paper/cardboard or anything really as long as it blocks the lizards view to outside of the enclosure. This will also reduce stress for an acclimating monitor. This is just my guess as to whats going on.
