Milksnake Laws in MO

daniel1983 Jul 27, 2010 06:55 AM

I am from Louisiana and have a person from Missouri interested in buying some Red Milks (l.t. syspila).

I have looked online for a while and even placed phone calls without much luck in clarifying the MO reptile laws.

I would appreciate it if someone could clarify to me the Missouri native reptile laws as it pertains to someone selling captive born snakes.

Thanks.

but I can give you my interpretation of them. Be aware, though, that I'm not a lawyer and this is just my interpretation of the legal situation. Missouri changed and/or re-wrote a significant section of its laws pertaining to captive and wild animals. For example, many species of song birds (i.e. Finches) became illegal to own in the State. Along those same lines, it became illegal to collect most native reptiles and amphibians without a proper permit. As far as I'm aware, any stock collected prior to these changes in regulation would necessarily be grandfathered in. This would generally have to include their offspring. So, if the animals you have are captive bred from stock collected prior to the late 1990's (1999, I believe) or with a permit, they should be legal. It's a similar situation to Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, etc. I haven't read the MO regulations in quite a while, so there may be some restrictions on shipping native species back into the state.

On that note, you're parting with your hard-won critters? Getting back into Varanids?

Yep, me and captive reptiles are parting ways for awhile. With a new baby at the house and all sorts of things going on, time is short and it keeps coming down to spend time in the snake shed or spend time in the field. Field wins anyday for me....so I am cutting back until I learn how manage things better.

That said... I was thinking of going with an entirely "native" collection with animals that I personally collect. I really want to get some locality Louisiana Milksnakes going.
