Do you take your snake outside?

Void Jul 27, 2010 01:54 PM

I see nothing wrong with taking a snake to the park, pet store, or wherever you'r allowed to bring them. Course I don't mean someplace loud and crowded. If your snake stresses/freaks out easy then no you wouldn't take em out. But if its stays calm pretty much nomatter what then why not take it somewhere?

Not sayins you should try and see how much your snake can handle before it wants to eat your face. Just if your snake does fine outside then why not take it outside?

One problem with allowing public access to your snakes is lawsuits. In this lawsuit-happy world, if anyone ended up getting sick after handling your snake they could decide to sue you for exposing them to salmonella. I'm not saying it's likely to happen, but it's something to keep in mind. And that's not even mentioning possible lawsuit problems if it should BITE someone! Oh, another thought -- how about getting sued for emotional trauma if someone has a snake phobia?? Ya just never know!

That's just like taking a dog out for a walk then. There are people just as afraid of them than snakes. They can also have an allergic reaction to dog hair. Plus a bite from a dog can be way worse.

Sure, but dogs already have a long history of being accepted in society. Snakes don't.

Doesn't mean someone with a snake cant go to a park with a snake ya know. I see what you're saying tho. But snake owners should be able to take their snakes out just like a dog owner. Some people just need to educate themselves on snakes before to be afraid of them.

I'm just tellin' ya a few of the risks you might be running. The fact that people "should" educate themselves doesn't remove the fact that they "COULD" sue you if they felt like it. Reality is not always fair!

Oh I know its not fair and I know they could. People who know nothing about snakes then complain when they see one just annoys me. One day we snake owners will have our day.

Yeah, the only thing most people "know" about snakes, is to be deathly afraid of them..LOL!

They are afraid of them, so they will never learn about them.

This has pi$$ed me off for decades and I will never be able to understand the ignorant thinking.

If they only knew what simple, harmless creatures most snakes are, they would see how silly this taught fear actually is, but I just don't see these 95 percent of the population taking the time to learn this........ever!

Not when most TV shows are geared to sensationalize this insanity, instead of being geared towards educating people about them..LOL!

No, it's just like amazondoc said, and not the same thing with snakes at all though.

See, when someone freaks out over the sight of a snake you may have out in public, most will be apt not to take your side(including any police), especially if THEY don't like them.

The majority of people love dogs, while the vast majority despise and loath snakes, and always have. This will never change. It's been this way since the beginning of time, and will always be this way until the end of time, believe me.

I could tell you countless true stories I have experienced, but the short version is......it is simply best not to expose them to people unless they are people that you know have an interest in them, simple as that.

If you have a huge collection like I do, or even ONE that you don't want to see confescated, it is much wiser to stay as low-key as possible when it comes to snakes. After 43 years of owning them, I know this for a fact. A long time ago, it was a different story, but today's society sucks in many ways..LOL!

The "I have a right to take them anywhere I want" isn't always what is best..LOL!

I have seen photo shoots with snakes at a public park. For some reason, the public thinks of that as a controlled situation and does not have the same reaction as some person walking around with a snake with seemingly no purpose other than to seek attention. I am speaking of the public's perception. That is what most non-herpers think of folks carrying unbagged/uncaged snakes in public places.

The hobby is not going to win supporters with what you have suggested.

so if somebody goes to the park with their snake they're looking for attention? Could it not be cause they would like to spend the day with their pet like somebody with a dog?

No, its for attention. At least that is what the public thinks, and they may be right in most cases.

We do so with dogs because it benefits the dog - they need exercise and they are social animals. Plus dogs come back if loose in most cases.

I believe exercise is good for snakes too and achievable in a house or backyard. But a snake will try to get away at a park (or anywhere) - it has no social ties to you. That is a big difference. People know that too. A loose snake in a park is bad press.

I only take them on the porch or our redbud tree(its small enough that if they go to high I can still get them).I do live in a very tiny town, so there isnt really any place else to take them. But I also am in the midwest and surrounded by people who would go around the block just to run a snake over.I like to keep my hobby personal, so I dont flaunt what I got..

I don't for several reasons.
I don't know what animals other people will have outside; I once had my albino retic outside for photos (in my yard) and a starling got too close; she went into full on feed mode and it was NOT a good situation. I don't want to think of a person with a small dog or cat.
It's not particularly good for the snake; it can't hide, can't thermoregulate, etc.
And there is the public to deal with too; like it or not, fair or not, it freaks people out a lot more than having a dog out. And our hobby's taking a lot of hits as it is right now so I don't want to exacerbate it.

I take my leusistic rat snake to Central Park (NYC) all the time if the weather is good. She makes lots of friends. To date she's been puppy dog tame and seems to tolerate meeting new people. It's funny to see someone walk by who sees her out of the corner of their eye and jumps 5 feet away, but a lot of people want to come meet her. Especially kids who seem much less afraid than adults. I have a great picture of a Korean bride kissing my snake.

I've seen some guy bring his 6' burmese python (which is not legal to have in NY) but (a) he doesn't seem to have any real knowledge about snakes and (b) he charges for pictures.

scrappy907 Dec 17, 2010 10:01 PM

Here's the picture I was referring to.

terrylove Dec 23, 2010 07:38 PM

I took my burms outside all the time when the weather allowed it. However, it was always in the privacy, security of my front yard.

One time I took them to the local park. I couldn't believe how nervous I was. I'm super paranoid about bad experiences/press with my snakes. Nothing eventful happened. I did have to stand over my female when a dog came running up to investigate. (Dogs weren't allowed at this park btw.) The dog owner assured me his pet wouldn't hurt me. When I picked up 13 feet of python and assured him I was concerned for his dog and not myself, he put the dog back on the leash.

A few minutes later a couple girls were walking in a direct path to intersect my albino male. I called out to them and said something like,
Me: "Um... excuse me."
Them: (Confused, blank looks)
Me: (With a smile) "Don't freak out, but there's a snake in front of you."
Them: (Frozen, clutching each other, scanning the ground, finally spotting the snake)
Me: "He won't hurt you, I just didn't want you to be surprised by it." (More smiles)
Them: "THANK YOU!" (giggles, Making a WIDE arc around the snake)

The word must have gotten out because for the rest of the afternoon people were scanning my area of the park on tip-toe from the running track.

Those are my experiences. I'm all about taking your snakes outside when it benefits the animal. (Catch the key part of that sentence?)

Terry
