i think you're wise, someday you'll have an adult that's a single, identifiable subspecies (eastern, california, desert, florida, etc) and not something you have to hyphenate to identify.
You'll find many different opinions on hybrids vs not, but my first contact with kings was in the wild, and i'd rather have one the way it would have come from the woods than one created in a tank. btw, there are places along the range of each subspecies where intergrades occur and would also require a sort of hyphenation.
