Bummed out by sudden death of yearling

KevinM Jul 28, 2010 11:37 AM

Man, I am bummed about the death of my male black and white cal king. I was raising him to pair with a nice 50/50 blk and wht female yearling I have. He refused food the week before last but I didnt react to it as I figured he was going into shed. I did notice his cage was smellier than usual and had some of those little crazy flies. I immediately cleaned out his cage along with the rest of the juvie rack at the time. I offered him food this past Monday and when I went to check on him Tuesday, he was dead. I know it could be one of several reasons. Regardless, it still bums me out as he was doing great since I purchased him in December. Its always unexpected and makes you shrug your shoulders. I quess I will have to try and find a suitable sized and colored male again to pair with the female AHHHHH!!!!

I feel your pain!

I had nearly the same thing happen with one of my corns a couple of months ago. NEVER refused a meal, shed regularly, no problems. But I DID notice the ittybitty flies in the cage a week or two before it happened. Then two days after a feeding, it was dead --regurged mouse and died. I hate it!

Interesting observation about the flies. They know something we don't!

Thanks Amazondoc. Not the first time I have had a sudden death, and probably won't be the last. I have never had an epidemic associated with any deaths in my collection to date, knock on wood. I dont suspect health issues with the rest of my collection, but will keep an eye out for any pesky flys to give me an indication something may be going on!!! I think there may be a correlation.

It would be most useful to know what sort of flies are in the snakes' habitats. Are the flies attracted by an open wound on the snake?
I am sorry your little one died.

Thought I had already responded here. But I just wanted to say it happens man. My BubbleGum Rat died just a few days ago, and she ate a rat pup the night before! So go figure.
