Update on no-eyed baby

jason Jul 29, 2010 09:33 AM

I didn't think this guy had much of a chance when he hatched, but he was flicking his tongue and active, so I figured i would see how things went. Not only is he still alive, but he has shed and last night he ate a hopper sized ASF with no assistance.

I'm really glad to hear it. Other than looking a little...well, creepy, he is kind of cute. In and Adam's Family sort of way.

They are amazingly resilient aren't they?
My policy regarding birth defects has always been that if they can eat and get around unassisted then I will keep them or find a home for them. Glad you gave him a chance.
Best of luck to you and this little guy.

While it's cool he is doing well, hopefully you won't breed him, just in case he is a genetic defect.

I stumbled upon a site that consistently produces eyeless turtles...and I think it's not-so-cool of them to do.

He will never be bred. He's going to be a pet and nothing more. I am familiar with the website you are talking about, and while some of the mutations breeders strive for are more of a defect than a morph (i.e. scaleless snakes, which I think are cool), breeding for a characteristic that hinders an animal so much and probably proves fatal in a good number of those that hatch out is irresponsible.

Agreed. You are good in my book.
