I imagine it is probably a simple matter of not washing the hands. I would feel the bigger problem would be exposing the snakes to salmonella.

The type of salmonella that the rodents had and that has supposedly affected 17 people does not affect reptiles. I have a large amount of feeders from them and was worried about my snakes. But on their website it says that this type of salmonella can not be passed to reptiles. I contacted them just to make sure and received an email stating that microbiologists confirmed that the reptiles can not be infected by that type of salmonella.
