monitor food: whole animal vs. Naturezone

vulcan Sep 24, 2003 01:17 PM

Has anyone tried those "complete diets" that Naturezone and a few others have come out with? It sounds too good to be true. They are advertized to have all the nutrients needed. Are they truely complete diets? How do they compare to the whole animal diet? Here is an advertizement that I copyed off the naturezone website. naturezone.fauna.com/foods-supplements.php

"Monitor & Tegu Bites

A soft, moist food flavored with real Chicken & Chicken Liver. This ready to eat food is high in protein, calcium, and essential nutrients. It is has the aroma and flavor of real Chicken & Liver which Monitors, Tegus and other meat eating lizards find irressistable. It is also a favorite of Box Turtles
Item Code --- Description

MNTB1-54651 --- 12 Oz Sugg Retail $ 6.92
MNTB1-54652 --- 1 Qt Sugg Retail $ 16.40
MNTB1-54653 --- 1 Gal Sugg Retail $ 39.78"

They also have bites for turtles, bearded dragons, geckos, iguanas, tortoises, tarantulas, feeder insects, and feeder mice!

before everyone starts giving you the same answer.... what do you think? That is the important part!

I was just wondering what peoples' opinions were of those who have tried this product. I was not asking how to properly feed a monitor. This type of product is a new concept and I know for example that anyone who has kept iguanas knows that a simpler way to feed them would be wonderful (I know this isn't the iguana forum but I used that example because iguanas are a hassle to feed "properly". Just because somthing is a new concept it does not mean that it is blasphemy. FR finished explaining the importance of thinking logically about new concepts below when he argued about keeping monitors together. I was simply curious about the product, so if anyone has tried it before I would be interested to know what you thought.

I'm not sure how that winking face got there instead of a parenthesis, so just ignore it.

that is exactly why I asked you to see what you thought first. It is just better to state your opinion before you ask others theirs, it just shows that you can think for yourself and it allows others to respond accordingly knowing that they are not thinking for you. With that said, A very close buddy of mine has tried those kinds of diets. The stools of the animals changed dramitically they became a bit runny, and the odor became worse. He fed his to a juv. albig. That diet only lasted two weeks before he jumped back to reality. Remember the same people that sell those foods sell reptile carpet, and heat rocks, and so on and so fourth. Although I am not sure exactly which company he used. Well I hope that helps a bit.

Thanks that does help. And sorry if my last post sounded confrontational, but after reviewing many posts here I noticed that some people like to insult rather than answer questions. I mistook your first responce as a personal insult, sarcastically insulting my intelligence, as if you were saying "of course whole foods are the answer he should have known better."
Anyway, thanks for the info.

Nothing new about them but the add on the classifieds, same product. As a matter of fact another company makes something under the name of "Ectotherm" thats been around for many years and supposedly has all the good ingredients (blood, guts etc) but they dont like it either and its looks like jellow to me. Keeping montors or any animal together is no new concept, its been done since zoos first started, and some caught on later. His arguement was whatever it took to say someone else is wrong, because he has said before "why even worry about trying to mess up what mother nature has done for millions of years to create our current species by trying to cross them etc". The man has loads of good info but the best way to get it is to speak to him as he is a gentleman outside of the internet, although he says one thing and argues the opposite a few weeks or so later. Seriously he can teach you alot but know how to separate the attitude on here from the info, and read what hes says carefully you might missunderstand.

Do you know what is actually in it? I tried a small container once on several monitors and a red tegu as well as a blue tongue skink and other herps, results are nobody ate it, except the crickets and roaches. They are tofu, weat germ, carageenan, and seaweed, and possbly things that are not good for them at all, so where are the ingredients they need like whole rodnets, etc? Stick with whole animals and save your money that way also.
