Tankmates for RES

poetichusky Sep 24, 2003 02:19 PM

Hello all,
I bought a baby RES a month or so ago and he seems to be doing great, eating well and very active. He runs(well swims) for cover every time I come near his tank, which is a good sign. He even seems to be growing already. I recently saw an African Sideneck turtle and just fell in love. I've being doing reasearch and it seems they require similar care to a RES. Given the fact that I would get one of similar size to my baby RES from a reputable person, would they make good tank mates? Also, how about adding a baby Eastern Painted to the mix? Would it be best to introduce everyone now and raise them all together or raise them separately and intorduce them later on? With all the talk of disease from baby turtles, I'm worried about cross contamination and such. Any tips at all would be greatly appreciated. THank you.

The painted turtle would do just fine with your red ear as long as they are close in size and you make sure they both eat. With the sidenecks I would keep them separate, from what Ive seen of them they can be quite aggressive if not given enough room.
