What is your favorite milk snake?

arkanis Aug 01, 2010 01:41 PM

Hey, what is your favorite milk snake? I am going to the L.A. reptile expo next weekend and want to buy a milksnake - tell me what type is really cool. So far i like mex milk, new mex milk, utah milk, and az milk ---- do you think any of these will be available at the show?

I personally like easterns (l t triangulum) but you won't see any of those.

North American milks are hard to come across but there are people who breed them, you just might have to search a bit. Mexican milks (annulata) are beautiful and common.

Just don't have the room for them all. My favorite would have to be a tricolor hypo honduran.

Do you specifically want a North American milk, or do you just want something flashy, or do you want something easy to handle, or what??

I am not ANY kind of milk expert, but I'll tell you what I happen to like. In North American milks, I am always impressed when I see pics of syspila. Very beautiful snakes. For showy milks in general, I really like Hondurans. Good size, blinding colors, easy to maintain, and fairly good to handle (they tend to be squiggly but not aggressive). But it all depends on what characteristics are important to you!

Things that are important to me are handleability, natural looking (many crossovers etc, no mutants), vivid tricolors, small size... at this point i am leaning away from hondurans and sinaloans and toward anulata (or mtn king) -

What is the personality and temperment of an anulata?

make sure you buy a pair that has eaten at least 3 times.Ask the seller if he will put a pinky in the deli cup. I agree with doc I like syspila(red milks)Pyros are even more striking and they retain the red and white as they age.Milks offen do not retain the bright colors they show as subadults

Last two pics are mt kings form Az

Are my eyes deceiving me or did the snake in the first pic get decapitated about 3 inches down give or take?

The very existence of flamethrowers means that sometime, somewhere, someone said to themselves..."You know, I really want to set those people over there on fire...but I'm just not close enough to get the job done!

My favorite by far is the New Mexico Milk. I have a beautiful pair, along with a clutch of 6 babies that I am working on getting started. They are chellenging as babies, but the parents are aggressive feeders.

Everyone has their favorite form. Mine, for example, is multistrata. Others like syspila, gaigeae, gentilis, or campbelli.

As for what'll be available, I'd put money on the table that there'll be a puacity of North American forms. You may see a few annulata or a "temporalis" or two, but your chances of seeing any of the others are slim to none. Sinaloan, Nelson's, Pueblan, and Honduran milks will predominate the triangulum group, but will probably be overshadowed by the vast numbers of Ball Pythons, Boas, etc.

I would love to see a polyzona on the market, however, I have never seen any polyzonas ever. If anyone has one, I would love to see a picture. I do have a campbelli, however, I personally feel that they are rather fast for milksnakes and their attitudes make them unique.
