Ackie Behavior Question

rottenweiler9 Aug 01, 2010 10:08 PM

I have two ackies that are a little over a year old each. I assume one is a female and the other is a male because they were born a couple weeks apart and the bigger one is much bigger than the little one. Today when I went in to clean the water bowl the little one was underneath it. She has been there before, but this time when I lifted it out and walked away with the bowl the bigger one came flying out and found her and grab her by the top of her next and threw her, she went running off to where they use to lay together all the time. Is this normal or do I need to separate them. I thought I saw them a few weeks ago hooked up, but could not tell you for sure since I really was not paying attention.

Any thoughts.

Sounds like you might have two males. The larger one is dominate and so is bigger. They could work it out or one could kill the other one. That is part of the fun (or sometimes head ache) of keeping monitors. You are the only person that is really in a place to make the decision to split them or not. I tend to er on the side of caution but, others will probably tell you different. Maybe if you post pics people can help you with the sexing so you can rule that out.

Ya, I looked and looked and looked. I went all over the place from Water to Black Throat, to White Throat to Ackie and then all back around for a few years. Then one day sitting at work I saw some babies on the classfieds and jumped on them. I have to say everyone in here was right. I am so glad I did not get a water, black throat, white throat, ect. right away because I can see how the bigger ones would be a lot of work, much more than the snakes I have. Not that I am lazy but things start to add up. Now on to what I think of them.

Mine for the longest time hid and never came out. Now, I see them come out and eat, and what makes them great to have is they are like little Komodo Dragons. Someone said that to me and I had to see it to beleive it. I love to watch them eat the crickets and walk around. They are always moving when they are out. They still are very shy and run off when I come in, so I just sit in the dark and watch them. So, I do like them and that suprises me since I usually like my pets large.

Eating, I use to buy 1500 crickets and dump them into a X Mas Tree rubbermaid with food, but a lot of them died and it stunk and was a pain. Now I just stop twice a week coming home and pick up 72 crickets until they are gone and then I stop again for the next round. Then I feed them pinkies on Sat or Sunday, but yes the bigger one is a pig and I was amazed at the first time I saw him eat everything.

Size, Not big at all, maybe 10 inches the big one and little one 8 inches. The bigger one has much more color than the little one.

But, I would say I was not steered wrong when I asked and am very glad I went with two Ackies over one Monster. Don't get me wrong, I would still love a monster but these give me a great enjoyment for the room they have vs. what I would have needed for a huge one.

Good Luck, are you going to go Red or Yellow.

Hahahaha, no offense taken. I am a newbie and learn new things all the time about this stuff. If I where a pro I would be on TV but I do think they are cool, and wish I would have gotten a Trio instead of a pair but not enough funds at the time. Oh well. the best is just watching them go to work when they are trying to dig or look for things. Its like the National Geo Channel, Live.

I notice alot of people keep two or more monitors together I don't know if they are all hatched together or what the deal is. Mine don't get along. Even if they had a huge ass cage I still think they would bully each other.

I would seperate them ASAP. You need to be sure you have a pair. Acanthurus are not difficult to sex. The male will have a squarer head, be more solidly built and will have more spines around the ventral reqion. If you continue to keep them together, you will probably loose one. I have kept and bred red acanthurus for years - males become incompatible with age.

All the Best
