Surprise!

CarlKoch Aug 02, 2010 02:11 PM

Back on March 25th, I put my female corn in with my little male while cleaning her cage. He was still QUITE small and at less than a year old, I didn’t think there was any way he could lock up with her. I was surprised to find that he WAS capable, but assumed if anything came from the union, it’d be mostly duds and maybe a couple good eggs at most. Imagine my surprise when the female dropped 16 perfect eggs on May 7th!

Here she is in the laying box, while the anxious father waits on top of the box (this was NOT posed!). Note the huge size difference!

He’s a pretty boy, allegedly from an Abbott mated with a Jasper County.

She’s a WC I found in Bradford County, Florida in the spring of 2009.

The clutch hatched from July 8-11 -- 16 perfect babies. They’ve all shed, and 14 have eaten f/t pinks. Here’s a shot of the clutch post-shed.

I think these are going to be very pretty. I plan to raise them for 6 months or so to see how they look.

Here’s one with an interesting head pattern.

Thanks for lookin’!

Carl

Carl,

Nice. Hopefully that will help dispel the "must be 3 feet, 300 grams and 3 years old to breed" myth.

I've been enjoying your "wild hognose" posts!

That's a cool sory and some cooler snakes! So am I correct to think the male didn't even go into hibernation at all? That Florida is a looker as well as the male. I know you will get some screamer offspring from these and you are smart to keep them all untill their colors come in enough to pick out the cream.

Thanks for the replies, y'all! Yeah, I knew it was a possibility they'd hook up...take a look at the size difference between these little male northern watersnakes and these big females:

Tim -- glad you enjoyed the hoggie stuff...nice shot, BTW! I'm hoping to have a hog article in Herp Nation mag soon.

Yes, quite a dimorphic difference between the two Nerodia sexes!

Great pic as well!
