I have a question! About BRB colors.

nhollis Aug 02, 2010 06:00 PM

Hey, I am a new Brazilian Rainbow Boa owner. I recently bought a year old BRB but I have a question regarding his color. Right now he is looking more brown than I had hoped. I was wondering, does the BRB's color change or get brighter as they age? If anyone could send me some yearling/adult comparison pics that would be great!

Most BRB's change shades of there color between 1 and 3 years old after that they are pretty much done. My BRB tends to look a darker color red as it gets closer to his shed time. This is a picture of my BRB at 1 year old. I dont think you should expect drastic colors changes unless of course you own the infamous "fluffy" BRB that i believe Dave Collins owns right now.

No doubt BRB's look prettier as babies (IMO), but they still retain a certain beauty as adults. Here's a before and after picture of my 2006 BRB. As you can see from the pictures, the brown circles have blended in and the snakes is now solid brown. However, those crescents are still glowing.

you mean after and before correct? I don’t see no brown snake in the first picture, I see a beautiful adult BRB, neonates are typically brown and then get their color as they reach 1-3 years.
Adult BRB's can be brown, red, orange yellow, and all shades inbetween.
So IMO I'm going to completely disagree, here's a before and after of my little girl

2 months old

and 4 1/2 years old

Correct, the pictures are 'after' then 'before'. I didn't download them in correct order.

Thanks guys! This helps alot. I think I should expect my boa to stay close to his orangish brown. Here are a couple pictures of him. Hes about one year old now.

Agreed with all that was said, they do color in for the first 18 months (give or take) some going up and some going down but not typically a lot. Since your's is already a yearling I would expect it to pretty much stay as it is.

I think Cliff mentioned that adults can sometimes change as well. Typically go from decent looking to brown vary rapidly but still produce nice babies I've been told by another breeder. I had a female do that, nice looking one season and browned out the next. Sold her as a pet.

My female when I first bought her was fairly light then she darkened as she grew older. Some before/after pics of her below:

First, is when I bought her...Winter of 2005. She was approximately 6-8 months old.

Next is her about two years ago, picture was taken June '08.

Yeah, I would say by 2 years the color will be pretty close to the adult color. However, I do have a BRB female that was orange as a baby, really browned out and was ugly by 2 years, but at 3 her oranges came back and she is really quite pretty. So, who knows.
