First eggs ever are hatching! joy!

AbsoluteApril Aug 03, 2010 02:47 PM

In 1998 when I first got into reptiles I had a pretty nice little corn collection but sold them off after a couple years to focus on boas. I kept one and slowly picked up another one here and there over the years. Tried pairing up for the first time this season but the male was still young and small and I saw no action. They were together less than 24hrs. To my surprise, the female laid eggs which I found after they were already a week old and quite dented. Didn't have an incubator (didn't think I needed one this year!) so I left them where she dropped them in her hide box, surrounded them with damp moss and began the big wait. The eggs on the side I had touched ended up going bad and molding. I really didn't expect any to hatch.

The big wait is over! Found this morning:

I am thrilled! 2 are out so far:

At least 2 more already poking their heads out:

So this is a huge first for me and I am super egg-cited! I hope you like the blurry bad pics. haha Thanks for looking!

p.s. - they are all amel motley het hypo and carmel as far as I understand the genetics (dam is a sunglow motley and sire is a butter motley, both from SMR stock)

It's pretty exciting to see a clutch of snakes hatching - especially when they are motleys as nice as those!

Thank you everyone for such nice comments! I know I don't hang out on this forum much, so I greatly appreciate it. It really is a blast to see these new little babies and while this clutch isn't as variable as most, it's still quite exciting to see each new one! A couple have some connected motley saddles just like the mom.

2 more came out last night but all the pics I took of those were blurry. This morning 3 more had emerged, here's their pic:

To say that I am thrilled with the strength of the motley pattern most of these babies show would be an understatement! Motleys are my favorite.

Thanks for looking and thanks again for the nice words!

Just found #8 to emerge this evening and snapped a few quick pics. Almost a full stripe! Here's a pic with flash:

pics without flash:

So I kind of understand that motley and striped are linked but never really understood how it worked. Both parents are motleys, the mom has some q-tip saddles where some are linked forming small stripes, maybe 2 or 3 saddles at the most in one stripe. The dad has the normal motley circles strong on the front half, weak on the back half. Does this mean both are also het striped?

thanks,
-April

"Does this mean both are also het striped?"

Nice little striper there!!

Yep. It would appear so. Awesome looking snake. Don't see too many with that solid of a stripe.
