Bullsnake outside = mobbing behavior

mkper5 Aug 03, 2010 08:31 PM

I have been bringing my bullsnakes outside intermittently for the past few years. They either stay in a large outdoor enclosure or they are allowed to roam around under close supervision.

I had my largest 66 incher out to bask in the grass today. He was moving around near a bird feeder that was recently set up. There is also a small hummingbird feeder with sugar water near there as well.

A pair of hummingbirds flew up to the snake and were hovering around him while I was sitting just a few yards away. They seemed more curios than alarmed. Not too long after that a few cardinals perched above him in a tree and made a bit of noise. Then around 15 black birds(starlings maybe?) started flying around above us.

I quickly brought him in but it was really cool to see that behavior.

Cool that you give it some out time. I get some bird interest occasionally but they give up quick. The birds definitely take notice though.

I have a pair of blue jays who come onto the back porch to steal cat kibble even thought the cats are right there! Really nervy little squawkers! Squawk! Squawk! Squawk! I got annoyed with this so I put my bull snakes out on the porch in a screen tub next to the cat food pan and went back inside (the birds wont come if a human is on the porch) and I watched from behind the screen door. The blue jays went ballistic, screaming and hopping from branch to branch in the nearby sequoia tree, but would not chance passing near the snakes. Unfortunately I could not leave my snakes out there unsupervised, and when I brought them back in the little blue thieves were at it again. Oh, well, they don't eat much.

because some bird gave away its location in the wild LOL!! If you ever see birds like jays or mockingbirds dive bombing something near a tree or in a field, check it out. Chances are its a snake LOL!!!

My friend found a huge AZ Sonoran because of squawking birds. He was in southern AZ for Monsoon season, and heard birds squawking right outside the window of the place where he was staying. He went out and saw the Sonoran going up a tree to have some eggs for breakfast.
