Ryan_Sikola Aug 04, 2010 12:18 AM

I'm bored again so I'll share some pics of my rat snakes.

Here are an captive bred, unrelated pair of AZ green rat snakes, ones box canyon locale and the other is santa ritas, try and figure out which is from where

Male:

Female:

Next up is a few pics of my young pair of ladder rat snakes, they are like tiny little pituophis minus the scale keeling.

Male:

Female:

Hope you enjoyed this post, babies from licorice obsoleta x bairdi will be posted when they hatch (but in the hybrid discussion forum)

The triaspis are awesome of course. Those Ladders even have a high rostral like a pit. How big do they get?

Ladder snakes grow to 2-4 feet usually, the record is 5 feet 3 inches I believe. They hiss like pituophis too

I want to believe they are old world pituophis.

Or convergent evolution has these lampropeltinine colubrids taking the same niche only in southern europe.

I frequently refer to them as the mugitus of Europe due to their fiestiness; they hiss like crazy and have a small cartilaginous filament at the base of the glottis (sound familiar, "Pit" people?). I mentioned the similarity these animals have to Pituophis on that Pit forum some time back but no one took notice; can't say I'm surprised.

Bart - I recall and appreciated your comment (I read just about all YOUR posts) regarding the epiglottis, just didn't post a reply in that particular case, probably because I had nothing to offer other than a thank you, which brings up a point.

I realize that many who view don't comment at all, others comment very sparingly. To each his/her own but without replies and follow-ups the forum loses most of its value. As a regular consumer of this resource I try to offer at least some feedback to posts which interest me, even when I feel lazy or non-verbal , not only as a courtesy to others whose contributions I appreciate, but to maintain the momentum if nothing else.

There are a couple things which frustrate me but on which I will not pass judgement as certainly no one here has any commitment or obligation to abide as I might wish.

1. When a poster fails to acknowledge and respond to questions regarding his/her post, as I think that a poster, in hosting a thread, would wish to respect and honor sincere expansion of his/her contribution.

2. When I go to the trouble to carefully address a question or concern and receive no reply whatsoever, at least to acknowledge that the person to whom the reply was directed, read it.

...another thing that bugs me but for which I can't blame anyone is when no one even acknowledges a post such as this one which by me is an attempt to encourage thoughtful discussion. ...let's see if anyone even replies to this

...all O/T I know.

Well, Box Canyon basically is in the Santa Ritas....I'd say the first animal is a BC snake..my female looks identical to it.

Those Green Rats are AWESOME! Have they bred yet for you or are they a couple of years away? Those Ladders do look Gopher-ish. Great pics.
