Newborn Shed Problem?

drasticplastic Aug 05, 2010 12:16 AM

Just checking to see how normal this is.

This little male was born on June 15th of this year and has still yet to shed. His skin looks as if it's coming off around his body (sounds like it too) and he's peeling at the nose, but he won't do much to finish the job. I've tried soaking a few days a week also. He's eaten 3/5 times offered and is otherwise acting normal. There are also 3 other babies that haven't shed as of yet but they don't look like this one. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks.

Can you confirm that he has already entered into the shedding proccess (milky eyes, then cleaning up)? Or you are just expecting him to shed, since he was born in June?
I have experienced something similar with sabogae babies last year, when none of them started to shed after the birth. What's more, they didnt really show any interest in feeding in the first 4-5 weeks. Once they had started to feed, shedding was not an issue.
If your snake has never entered into shedding yet and feeds readily, I'm pretty sure he will shed soon, no need to rush it.

I never actually saw him getting ready to shed, but it's starting to come off on his nose, he just doesn't seem interested in getting the rest off. He's eating pretty good so I'm not too worried about it, I was just wondering if close to 2 months after birth without shedding was weird. Other litters of mine have gone pretty smooth without questions. Thanks for your input.

I lost a boa like this early this year. I don't know why they won't shed. My boa was a 6 month old that had shed well before. The problem is when they try to void they can and then septicemia sets in. I would soak him in shallow water. Then I would assist shed by rubbing his sides, belly and top lighty. The old skin will start coming off. Make sure the vent is clear but actually it is not difficult to get all the skin off.
