I've come to the conclusion...

Tony D Aug 05, 2010 08:10 AM

that I'm not a very big fan of milk snake morphs. Kind of ironic given I breed hypo coastals but it just seems too many morphs simply detract from the attractiveness of the natural forms.

I do see your point, I would much prefer Locale's rather then Morphs

Mind if I ask what it is that lead you to that conclusion?

I tend to prefer natural phenotypes, too... as you already know. I do appreciate the genetics and biochemistry behind the morphs, though.

Tony, I had the same question as Cole. What led you to that conclusion and to sharing it with the community?

I don't disagree with you at all, as I prefer "normal" phenotypes as well. But there are a few morphs that I really like as well .

I should better qualify what I mean.

I just don't find too many morphs to be as attractive a a more natural phenotype. Some, like hypo coastals and Hondurans or pinner Mexicans are really sharp looking but most just come across as freakish.

Not sure why I decided to share this with the community other than to throw a little honesty out there and see what happens.

Thanks for the honesty Tony, but I disagree with one thing...

All pink snakes are not created equal.

That is one of the few albinos I like. It has a nice pastel look to it and not the gaudy white and garish red of a typical albino tri-color.

I feel that way with a lot of colubrid morphs. Everything seems to blur into shades of pink, yellow, and purple IMO and pattern is lost or hard to see. Plus, I dont see the big deal behind snakes with different genetics basically looking the same IMO as far as coloration is concerned. A pink snake is a pink snake regardless of T-, T , Hypomelanism, etc. Dont get me wrong though. There are several morphs I LOVE, especially in corns. However, with kings and milks, not so much.

I dunno, I really like lavender anything.
At least it's not like balls or corns yet!

I think Tony D has a good point. If you took a '66 vette and added enough aftermarket alterations, flares, garnishes, etc. that it is hard to recognize as a vette, it just loses most of the original appeal. Also, when you have a documented original classic, changing anything on it causes it to lose not only appeal, but value. Pure forms can't be replaced, but it is nice to see a few things that are different.

Had an 86' for 14 years!

KevinM Aug 05, 2010 04:17 PM

I look at some of the morphs like a paint job. Does it matter if the color was created by mixing blue, red, and white to make light purple; blue and pink to make light purple; or even white to purple to make light purple? The end result with many of the morphs with differing genetics is still light purple. Heck, most breeders can only tell the difference between the morphs by knowing what was bred to what. If I walked in and mixed all the similar morphs with different genetics together, the breeders could NEVER tell the difference visually LOL!!!

You could say the same thing about most subspecies of milks as well!! How many people even on this forum could score a 80% or higher on a subspecies test?? Not many! I understand that Tony is likely burned out of morphs, it is bound to happen to us all at some point. We all see that one of a kind animal and wish we could have one...skip forward a few years and WE DO all have one, now they are less desirable. The first Albino Nelsons, we all remember where we were when we first saw it right? Problem here is now half the normals are het for this and that as well. I think there is still alot of room left to work REFINING existing morphs instead of simply combining them to produce yet another white colorless snake. And without getting into the Holy locality arguement, dont the simple, plain non-morphs remind you why you got into snakes to begin with? I mean no albino can do that right?

BobS Aug 07, 2010 11:54 AM

"plain non-morphs remind you why you got into snakes to begin with? I mean no albino can do that right?

Interesting.

I tend to like the normal looking too Tony. although I am comfortable refinining for the nicest colors/examples of normals which I guess is not too distant from morphs?

now that the "novelty" is over I'm beginning to feel like buying a morph is like buying an animal that didn't come with all the colors.

Although Amel. corns have been around so long, owning one now is getting to feel like owning a classic car! kind of cool ,simple and retro. LOL

>>that I'm not a very big fan of milk snake morphs. Kind of ironic given I breed hypo coastals but it just seems too many morphs simply detract from the attractiveness of the natural forms.

I love many morphs -- and, in fact, most of my snakes are morphs. However, there are also a lot of morphs that don't float my boat, and many that I think are less attractive than the normal forms. But to each their own! These are PET snakes, after all -- and just like domesticated dogs, there is going to be a lot of phenotypic manipulation going on whenever breeders get ahold of them. Not many people really want to keep a "locality" wolf, after all.
