Jungle Stripe (tail) Snow Leo genetics??

badgecko5 Sep 24, 2003 03:54 PM

Does anybody have an idea what the genetic breakdown for a snow leo would be, I'm new to breeding and just learning the genetics end of it, any help would be appreciated. This ones just way over my head, but I hatched one. Its clutch mate is jungle striped (normal coloration). Mother is pretty much unknown looks to be golden reverse stripe (trail of spots down her back) and the Father is normal / 66% het. Blizz.

From what we understand so far - "SNOW" is a line-bred trait - and not a simple recessive trait (which means you can't get "hets" for snow).

To get a snow- you would have to breed two snows together - and then, it still might not happen.

Blizzards are a different deal - it's recessive.

Snows definitely are cool, though. . . .

Yes, Snow is a line bred trait. The official term for that is Complex Inheritance. What that means is that it takes multiple genes to combine in just the right way to exibit the morph.

Actually, you do not have to have two Snows to get a Snow. I have bred low quality Snows from a pair of high yellows that I had several years ago. Having two Snows really improves your chances though.

One thing to keep in mind though. We have had several discussions lately on line bred animals and how much they change over the first few months of life. I would wait until after 6-8 months to for sure qualify it as a Snow as there are many animals that look to be one thing as a hatchling or juvie and then as an adult they look completely different. Give it some time.

Post some pictures for us.
