Genetic Low white pieds???

Chad_Ramsey Aug 05, 2010 02:32 PM

If you remember a month ago i posted that i hatched 1.1 low white striped pieds from the same clutch, from a het to het pairing

here they are:

I also bred the father of the above two pieds to a daughter of his, which was a 50% het, and get this little gem put of a 4 egg clutch. ( she laid 7 eggs but 3 went bad)

She has the best pattern IMO of the 3. She has a near complete stripe, one TINY little brake, BUT no side pattern whats so ever. Its just the melted pied look along both sides.

Here is a pic of all three of them together. The top two are the 1.1 that im keeping.

I like the one your are going to sell the best, it has a great look to it

Thanks, yeah it was a hard decision, but i made it purely on the fact that i kept the male of the 1.1 from the first clutch and sold the female to the breeder of the original het pair that produced them.

Then the only pied from the poss het to het dad clutch was female. So it worked out well for the both of us.

Beautiful low white pieds! Did you know they were "genetic low-white" or are you just realizing that now? My understanding of pieds is they can throw high or low white offspring regardless of parental phenotype. I have not heard of genetic low white prior to seeing these. I like them!

Thanks Susan. That is exactly what i thought about the varying white with pieds. I am not claiming that they ARE genetic, im asking actually. To tell you the truth, when the first two hatched out i was a tad disappointed. I wanted some white. BUT when the second clutch hatched out another i was estatic.

Ill just have to produce more low whites from this trio to make the claim that they are genetic for low white.

The amount of white in pied clutches does seem to trend. I have pieds and hets that year after year tend to produce low-whites or high-whites or in between. It is not guaranteed, though. The highest white pied I have produced to date came from a female black-backed het that consistently produced low-white offspring. If you are breeding a male with the tendency to produce low-white to a female that tends to produce low-white, I could see how that pairing might never produce high white. I do believe, though that you'll eventually get some hatchlings in the 20% to 30% white range. Now, I am in no way suggesting that a high-white pied will produce high-whites or a low-white will produce low-whites. I am just saying the % white in their offspring does seem to trend. Nice pieds, by the way!
