Mystery Baby??

SlytherLyn Aug 05, 2010 07:07 PM

I left for work this morning with 2 little noses peeking out, came home to one baby out of egg (the 5th to hatch so far) and 6 noses peeking out. This is my first year breeding corns so am having a bit of trouble figuring out what's what. Can you help me with this one that hatched today? It's a reddish colored baby but has dark eyes so is not albino. I thought perhaps diffused but I don't think the belly pattern and head pattern are right for that. Parents are 100% het for Amel, Anery, Charcoal, and Diffused. A few years back Kathy Love mentioned that the Snow that was the mom to my pair could have been a Hypo Snow or Snow het Hypo so my pair might have been het Hypos as well but she wasn't sure. Could this be a Hypo baby??? If so then my pair are het for 5 things If it's not a hypo, what is it?

Below is a belly shot, a pic of my mystery baby next to what I think is a normal baby, and a close up picture of the mystery baby. He/She is quite pretty in person, I was pretty excited to come home from work and see him/her out of the egg. I have 6 more peeking out right now and still several more waiting to pip. I've been waiting on this clutch since I bought the parents in 2002 as hatchlings. Worth the wait!!!!

Yes, that looks to be a perfect hypo phenotype there. I would say that they were both definitely het for hypo then. You will get a 25% chance of those being produced in the clutch....among other things of course..LOL!

You will see a substantial difference after the first shed too.

congrats!!

That baby does look hypo for sure. What will be cool is if you get two are more genes showing up in the same animal. Like maybe hypo bloodred or diffused, and maybe amel too? It will be interesting.

So far the only two that have at least two genes going on are solid light pink with no pattern. At least they are Blizzards, no way of knowing if they are also Diffused or Anery or Hypo or any combo of those. A white snake is pretty much a white snake. Depending on how many hatch I might keep them and raise them up to try to figure out what they are.

Thank you to everyone who verified my hypothesis that my mystery baby is Hypo which means the parents are het for for sure 5 things. Awesome

Ive posted before that many breeders wholesale the babies of multihet projects as what they are visually, not genetically. I am sure there are TONS of multihet normals, hypos, anerys, etc. floating around out there with non-visual homozygous traits, as well as heterozygous traits. Thats what makes corns fun, yet frustrating. Trying to identify the genetics of similar looking animals derived by different genetics is all but impossible IMO.
