Peculiar Splendida hatchling.....

Jlassiter Aug 05, 2010 08:41 PM

From my Axanthic female and Amel PH Hypo male.....
All the siblings to this one has the normal speckled sides and is showing some yellowish coloration........

This one has a cool zig-zag lateral pattern going on.....and it looks black and white right now......

It will certainly look better after shed......

Double het SNOW possible het (slim chance...lol) Ghost......

Thatys cool.

It is weird how when crossing reccessive traits in kings you sometimes get oddities on pattern or color in the normals.

The first thing I thought was Californiae influence but after looking at it again......I don't see any.......

It has the cleanest Splendida pattern I have ever seen.....I wonder if the male had the axanthic gene since I don't see any hints of yellow in this hatchling.....

But most axanthic splendida hatch out purplish then turn white......Unless there is another strain since my adult female is stark white and black......

BTW....both adults are from Don Shores......

That is one really cool looking king! Can you post a picture of the parents and a sibling to get an idea how odd it is?

Thanks a lot. Looks like it favors the albino as far as the lack of speckling goes, but with a different pattern. I think thats the coolest looking splendida I've seen. If you could produce more like that, that would be really cool. I'm sure a lot of people would like to add a king like that to their collection.

the combination of recessive genes (axanthic and hypomelanistic) contributed to the pattern anomaly? That is a VERY clean patterned splendida!! Nice one John.

Thanks Kevin....
And I believe the recessive genes may be the culprit, but I am not for sure....I am just hoping the look can be reproduced...

There definitely appears to be something at work negating the stipling effect. I quess time will tell if the stiples will bloom out, or the snake keeps the strong contrast. I would bet you are hoping it keeps the strong contrast LOL!!

I doubt it will speckle up....I am pretty much sure it will stay clean and contrasting....As I have seen many Splendida hatchlings and they are born with the lateral speckling......No ontogenesis causes this.....
BUT......
I am wondering if the ground color will turn yellow or stay white.......If it stays white it is axanthic like the mother.....And the father is a het axanthic......

But he was sold to me as an amel possible het hypo.......

The funny thing is I've never seen an amel Splendida with the speckling a normal phenotype has......
I am surely holding on to this female and have a similar male picked out of the clutch for a future pairing....

Very cool John!

Yes, I have seen many genuine splendida that also have the funny "chain" type lateral zig-zags on their sides too. As a matter of fact, my Santa Cruz, Arizona splendida x nigrita(Nogales king)has a VERY similar pattern too, just much thinner is all.

I looked at hundreds of photos and different intergrade photos from all over to get a real good handle on the one I have.

Nice clutch of kids man!, it does happen with genuine splendida for sure.

Yeah, splendida can be absolutely solid like yours, or have a little bit of lighter pattern in them too, especially in the first third of the snake's belly. Even pure forms of certain natural Cal. king morphs have solid black bellies too.

I have some other pure splendida sibs here, and one is totally black, while the other one has a bit of the typical getula blotching in the upper portion of it's belly.

I am betting that yours also have a lighter, sometimes pink anal plate as well that is idicative of the western getula complex.
