New at this, genetics Q...

behindblueyes21 Aug 05, 2010 09:32 PM

I searched through this forum, and there are a lot of beauties here!! I have had ball pythons since I was 18, I am almost 25. I have recently been able to get into buying some cool morphs, and would like to start breeding. I am interested in getting into some higher end morphs (aren't we all? LOL), and I have been researching genetics for a few months now. I even took a genetics class in school!! lol... But I am still confused about some BALL PYTHON (or color genetics).

Getting to the point, I really want to look at morphs that are still in the works such as mystics, potions, purple passions ect... I am interested in playing with Bananas as well. The paradox animals also have me intrigued.. though I understand that it has not been **proven as a passable trait...

I have asked this before, and the answer I get varies... are bananas and coral glows the same? if so, it is a morph that can not be created by combos? I would love to work with someone that would be willing to teach me the ropes. I doubt I could afford bananas at this time, but I am not unable to get ahold of "key" morphs needed for certain combos. I will one day try to dink around and try to unlock and prove out my own morphs, but I want to try with morphs that have already been discovered first.

You probably think I am jumping in too deep to start right?? LOL... I probably am... But I am just learning at this point, and want to fill my brain with as much knowledge as the masters... I love this... I am fascinated with it and I am determined to learn as much as I can before I start bringing hatchlings in to the world!

Thanks to all who respond!! I am open to getting emails at behindblueyes21@gmail.com as well.. Thanks a lot! I hope to get to "know" a lot of you. I also have been on iherp, getting to know people there as well. :D

I don't know much about coral glow, but as far as I know...Banana is a stand alone morph. Not sure if it's co-dom or dom though...or recessive for that matter...

Banana and coral glow are single gene animals. all that makes a banana is another banana. And, according to a thread below, banana, coral glow, and whitesmoke are essentially different bloodlines of the same morph. They're on my some day list as well, but i sure can't afford them right now

The answer varies because the jury is still out and all you are getting are guesses.

The breeders are still working out the genetics of banana and coral glow. As far as I know, nobody has done more than talked about crossing the two types.

morphs fall into two (2) categories....."Base morphs" and "Combo/Designer morphs"

to understand the combos you must first learn which are considered base. a base morph you cannot create....it's a natural fluke in genetics which affects either the pattern, the color, or both.

combos/designers are "man made wonders" that wouldn't be found in the wild (as of now i have never heard of a combo/designer morph being cuaght and sold)hence "man made".

once you learn that then you can venture off into deeper genetics such as "families" key example would be the Platimum complex another would be the YB/Whirlwind/Spector complex. which are all "variations of a particular morph" that all fall on the same allele.

it can get confusing sometimes...remember you have to crawl before you can walk.....and you have to walk before you can run.

One of the best explanations I've seen without getting into gnectics lingo that confuses most newbies! Pitoon, if you don't mind, I'd like to steal your explanation and post it on my website.

Thanks Pitoon.

Right now Orlando is recovering after going from boom to bust. It will be a while before we see single digit unemployment again and the number of foreclosures is one of the highest in the country.

I'd add a third category -- linebred morphs, like pastel in boa constrictors or Okeetee in corns.

The original platy daddy could be classed as a wild caught designer morph, IMO.

When you write your article, please run it by me or somebody who knows genetics lingo. There are getting to be major differences between how the textbooks use the terms and how herpers use them.
