Mercury Vapor Bulbs. Are they all the same? I have done a search and found some (cheap) s/m

at hardware stores @ 100 watts for around 15.00. Are these the same things as the Sun Mercury Vapor Bulbs sold at reptile sites?
Also, do MVB's put out heat too? Do I still need a basking light with those?

yes, mvbs provide heat as well as uvb, so you probably wont need a basking bulb depending on the size of your cage and such. i dont know about the bulbs at hardware stores, but the ones marketed for reptiels do vary. ibelieve capture the sun bulbs are notorious for burning out, and powersuns are most reliable. i have a powersun, i guess i got ti about a month ago, and so far so good. do a search here, you should be able to find a discussion of which brands are best.

The mv bulbs in the hardware stores don't have the special filament that produces the UVB. That is added for the reptile bulbs. The reptile mv bulbs like Powersun will provide heat and UVB. I highly recommend them.

I just started a research project on the UVB output by a few different bulbs. It's on my website if you're interested. And check back later too because I will be adding more mv bulbs to my study as I get them in...

enough that the animals need, we tested some that only had less that 1/10 of the tube ones, which are not that much to begin with and decrfease rapidly.

So, do not trust a manufacture when they say Full Sprectum or produces UVB, one companies barely registered on the meter at all so would be the effect of nothing to your animals.

It is amazing. Can buy a merc vapor for $25 that produces no UVB think you are doing a great thing. When a $5 halogen would do you just as good, and save you on the electric bill. The little war on the classifieds was funny when you see the results of independent testing, and the false claims a company put up. It is a way to make myself not be a patron of your company. Have to say there are 2 distinct places I will not look at there animals or goods from some of there claims in ads. I hate deceptive people.
