CRB- Pink Belly / shed cycle

OGFSnakes Aug 06, 2010 07:05 AM

Hello all, I am curious. My CRB (1 year old) gets a Pink/ Orange/ or 'Salmon' color on her stomach at the start of her shed cycle, about a week before she gets foggy eyed, it last for 4 days or so disappears and 3 to 4 days later gets the foggy look (makes her look an awesome purple)and sheds 3 to 4 days later. This happens regularly almost every 6 weeks on the dot. Is this the norm? The nice thing is that she is has a great temperament and eats throughout the entire cycle, in fact I have yet to have refuse a meal.

Normal

As has already been posted many people consider what you are seeing with yours as normal. I do kind of agree but my Colombian Rainbows kept on kraft paper substrate exhibit this very little if even at all. If you are using any other substrate or even paper and letting it get soiled I think you will see this occur more than what I see with mine on clean kraft paper substrate. See what yours look like the next few shed cycles if you keep them on clean paper substrate.

I noticed this with my BRBs and I kept them on clean plain paper towel which I changed regularly. When I first noticed the pink I at first though it was irritation or scale rot in early stages but it was way too evenly distributed over the entire belly...didn't make sense it would be from soiled paper towel, especially when I clean the cages at least once a week, more if it gets soiled. About the only time my snakes sit in soiled paper towel for a few days is when I am gone for a weekend, and they 'go' while I am away.

I don't remember seeing this redness when my female brb was a baby, just notice it while she is an adult...and being adult, she didn't shed all that often.. 2-3 times a year.

I've noticed that when the brb is on a wet substrate this is alot more noticable then when kept on a dry substrate, almost to the point your concerned it's an infection.

Thanks for the thoughts, I am hesitant about using a drier substrate as I have trouble maintaining humidity, she seems to like the Cypress a lot, she would rather burrow than use the hides and stays in the damper areas, I kept one side drier than the other for a while to see what she preferred.

I have a pair that is about 6 months of age. I keep them on white paper towel and experience the same color changes as listed.
