i was watching my year old cuban today and i saw him rip off a piece of shed off his tail with his teeth and he ate it
is this normal for them to do? i've never seen him do it before, but that doesn't mean anything

Perfectly normal.. Most lizards instinctively do this(I call it "skin recycling"
I believe in order to regain the proteins lost in the dead skin. I'm surprised your Cyclura ate his tail skin though, mine find it too spiny for their taste=).
